Virginia Motorcycle Shipping

Virginia holds the longest piece of I-81 in the country, 325 miles of it, from Bristol up the Shenandoah Valley. We provide up to ten free quotes from our network of licensed, insured carriers, which saves you time and money. That road, plus I-95 up the east side and I-64 across the middle, puts the state in the way of a lot of bikes. Norfolk, Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads cities handle the naval traffic. Arlington and the northern suburbs handle Washington. Richmond and Roanoke sit between them. A daily rider in Richmond and a track bike headed to Alton start in different corridors, and any request to ship a motorcycle to or from Virginia depends on which one yours is. Virginia motorcycle shipping is easy on the interstates and slower in the Blue Ridge and the southwest. Prices below are for a standard bike. Send a request through the quote form up top, or call 1-800-590-6492 whenever it suits you.

Ship a Motorcycle to Virginia, From Hampton Roads to the North

New York to Virginia Beach is only about 355 miles. A typical open quote is $350 to $475 and the drive takes 1 to 3 days, which makes it one of the quicker East Coast lanes. Boston to Arlington, about 440 miles, runs $375 to $525. Longer runs from the Midwest cost more but are still routine: Chicago to Richmond is about 780 miles and $450 to $625 with 2 to 5 days on the road.

Norfolk and Virginia Beach sit behind a maze of water. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which carries US 13 for 17.6 miles from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, are chokepoints, and a backup there can hold up a driver. Tell the carrier if you live on the Eastern Shore, since it adds distance and a toll.

Northern Virginia is different again. A driver can reach Arlington on I-395 off I-95, or on I-66, but a full trailer is awkward on a city street, so expect to meet at a lot in a larger suburb. From California, Los Angeles to Norfolk is about 2,710 miles, quoted at $875 to $1,200 and 7 to 10 days. The New York to Virginia, Illinois to Virginia and California to Virginia pages cover those lanes.

Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Rates and Transit Times

Last updated: October 2026

Mileage drives the price. A standard bike on an open trailer runs about $375 to $525 at 500 miles, $500 to $675 at 1,000 miles and $725 to $1,000 at 2,000 miles. The longer the haul, the lower the cost per mile. Los Angeles to Norfolk, around 2,710 miles, costs far less than five times the Virginia Beach to Chicago run.

For an enclosed trailer, add roughly 30% to 50%. A crate adds about $150 to $400, a trike or sidecar about $150 to $300 and a heavy tourer $50 to $100. Summer military season and rally weeks can raise the price. The rows below use open transport and a standard bike. Days start at loading, so pickup scheduling can add one to three more. Short East Coast runs, like New York to Virginia Beach at about 355 miles, sit at $350 to $475, while Roanoke to Richmond is $325 to $425.

How Getting Quotes Works

You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run Virginia lanes, and the offers come back to you.

1. Send one request

Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.

2. Carriers respond

We pass your request to carriers that move motorcycles in and out of Virginia. You can receive up to ten free quotes without spending hours calling companies one by one.

3. Compare the offers

Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can check any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.

4. Choose your company

You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.

Shipping a Motorcycle From Virginia After a Transfer or a Sale

Outbound traffic splits three ways. Hampton Roads and Richmond bikes head south on I-95 or west on I-64. Northern Virginia bikes go north through Baltimore and Philadelphia. The southwest, from Roanoke to Bristol, runs down I-81 to Tennessee and beyond.

Virginia Beach to Chicago is about 900 miles and $475 to $650 on an open trailer, 2 to 5 days. Richmond to Dallas is about 1,265 miles, $550 to $775 and 3 to 6 days. Norfolk to Miami runs about 950 miles and $475 to $675. Arlington to Orlando, around 845 miles, is $450 to $625. The matching pages are Virginia to Florida, Virginia to Texas and Virginia to Illinois.

Inside the state, Roanoke to Richmond is about 190 miles. A quote from $325 to $425 is typical and it takes 1 to 3 days on I-64 and I-81. Short trips are mostly filled by drivers already passing through, so give yourself a few days of flexibility.

If the bike is going to a buyer in the Midwest, or you have been transferred, give the dispatcher a four-day pickup window instead of a single date. It lets the driver fit you into a full route.

Virginia Motorcycle Transport on I-81, I-95 and I-64

I-81 is the heavy freight road. Over 325 miles it runs from Bristol through Roanoke, Lexington, Staunton and Harrisonburg toward the West Virginia line. It shares pavement with I-64 between Lexington and Staunton and with I-77 near Wytheville, and I-66 ends at it near Middletown. A crash on one of those stretches can back up trucks for a long time. That is also why dispatchers pad delivery windows on any bike coming down the valley from Pennsylvania or Maryland.

I-95 runs the east side: the Washington suburbs, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and south to North Carolina. I-64 ties Hampton Roads to Richmond, Charlottesville and the valley. Between the two, I-85 reaches south from Petersburg toward Charlotte and Atlanta, which is the road for bikes moving between Richmond and the Deep South.

The curvy roads riders brag about are not truck roads. The Blue Ridge Parkway starts at Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro and bars commercial vehicles unless approved. The Back of the Dragon, State Route 16 between Marion and Tazewell, runs about 32 miles over three mountains with hundreds of curves. Neither is a pickup point. Arrange to meet at a lot in Waynesboro, Marion or Tazewell and ride from there.

Virginia Weather and Summer Orders by Season

Winter hits the mountains first. It brings ice and some snow to the Shenandoah Valley and the southwest, and the high sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are often closed from late fall through early spring. Trailers still run, but a bad week can add a day.

Summer is military move season. Orders cluster from May through August, and the Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia lanes fill with bikes. Quotes run higher in that stretch.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and Hampton Roads is the part of the state most exposed. The best weather for a delivery is late spring or early fall, when the roads are dry and the mountains are open. A snug cover helps in any season, since a bike can sit in a pickup lot for an afternoon.

MotoAmerica at VIR and the Mountain Roads

The track that matters is Virginia International Raceway in Alton, in Halifax County, just north of the North Carolina line. MotoAmerica runs a round there in August. Fans and racers who live elsewhere sometimes ship a bike in for track days rather than tow it, and trailers fill up ahead of race weekends.

For road riders, the Back of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway are the pull. Some owners ship a bike in and spend a week in the mountains. Pick the dry days for riding, since rain can leave the Dragon slick.

Ask for quotes about three weeks before a race weekend. Prices can rise on busy lanes, and a pickup window of a few days gives the dispatcher room.

Military Moves Through Norfolk, Quantico and the Pentagon

Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest naval station, and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Pentagon in Arlington add to the flow. Orders are short and summer is the peak. Ask for quotes as soon as you have a report date, name the base on the form, and ask every carrier if it has military pricing. Some do, some do not. Gate access varies, so expect to meet the driver outside the base. If your orders send you overseas, ask the carrier what documents it needs before the pickup day. Some Hampton Roads moves happen on a few weeks of notice, and the longer you wait the fewer open trailers remain.

Virginia Shipping Challenges and Tips

Water crossings, mountains and summer orders cause most of the delays. A few steps help.

Bridge-Tunnel Backups

Hampton Roads has several bridge-tunnels, and a backup at one can hold up a driver. Delivery windows in Norfolk are wider for that reason.

I-81 Crashes

A single wreck on I-81 can stop trucks for hours. Pickups in Roanoke, Staunton or Harrisonburg can slip a day when it happens.

Summer Move Season

Orders cluster from May through August around Norfolk and Northern Virginia, and trailers fill. Prices rise when space is tight.

Tip: Pick a Lot in Northern Virginia

City streets in Arlington rarely work for a trailer. Choose a large lot in a nearby suburb and say so when you request quotes.

Tip: Book Summer Early

If your orders land between May and August, ask for quotes the day you receive them and give the carrier a window of several days.

Tip: Pack Light, Photograph Everything

Remove bags and phone mounts, keep the tank near a quarter full and take dated photos of each side. The prep checklist has the rest.

Virginia Motorcycle Shipping FAQs

What does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Virginia?

For a standard bike on an open trailer, the rough guide is $375 to $525 for 500 miles, $500 to $675 for 1,000 miles and $725 to $1,000 for 2,000. Enclosed adds roughly 40%. Your quote depends on the cities, the bike and the season. Compare several before you pick one.

How long does it take to ship a bike from New York to Virginia Beach?

New York to Virginia Beach is about 355 miles and usually takes 1 to 3 days after loading. Add one to three days for scheduling. If your dates are tight, ask each carrier for the earliest pickup it can offer.

Can a carrier deliver to the Eastern Shore?

Often, but it takes longer. The usual way in is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on US 13, which is 17.6 miles long and has toll plazas. Tell the carrier your address so the quote matches the road, and expect a longer window than for Norfolk.

Can I ship a bike to Virginia International Raceway?

Yes. VIR is in Alton, close to the North Carolina line. MotoAmerica runs a round in August, so ask for quotes about three weeks ahead. A delivery point in a nearby town is easier than the track itself. Ask the carrier what it prefers.

Will a trailer go up the Back of the Dragon?

No. State Route 16 between Marion and Tazewell is about 32 miles of tight curves. Arrange pickup or delivery in town, and ride the road yourself. The Blue Ridge Parkway also bars commercial vehicles without approval, so meet at a nearby lot.

Can I ship a bike while on military orders to Norfolk?

Yes. Get quotes the day your report date is set, name the base, and ask each carrier if it has military pricing. Summer is the busy season, so book earlier. Plan to meet the driver outside the gate, and tell the dispatcher about any overseas date.

Is open or enclosed better for Virginia?

Open is fine for most bikes and costs less. Pick enclosed for custom paint, a classic, or winter shipping through the mountains, where road salt and slush can reach the bike on an open trailer. It does cost roughly 40% more.

Do I need to be there at pickup?

Someone does. You or an adult you name signs the condition report at both ends. Walk around the bike with the driver before you sign. The report is what any damage claim depends on, so check the bike before you sign it.
