California to Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Richmond runs about $850 to $1,175 on an open carrier, and about $1,200 to $1,650 enclosed. A San Francisco pickup runs about $900 to $1,250.
Virginia Beach and Norfolk, the Hampton Roads end of the state, and Roanoke, in the valley on I-81, are priced close to Richmond from Los Angeles. Tell the carrier if you live on the Eastern Shore, since it adds distance and a toll.
Not every bike costs the same. Gold Wings and touring bikes add $50 to $100, trikes and sidecars add $150 to $300, and a non-runner means a winch on the truck.
Summer is military move season, with orders clustering from May through August and the Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia lanes filling up, so quotes run higher. The best weather for a delivery is late spring or early fall. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-81, I-95 and the Bridge-Tunnels
I-81 is the heavy freight road. Over 325 miles it runs from Bristol through Roanoke, Lexington, Staunton and Harrisonburg toward the West Virginia line. It shares pavement with I-64 between Lexington and Staunton and with I-77 near Wytheville, and a crash on one of those stretches can back up trucks for a long time, which is why dispatchers pad delivery windows on any bike coming down the valley. I-95 runs the east side through the Washington suburbs, Fredericksburg and Richmond to North Carolina, and I-64 ties Hampton Roads to Richmond, Charlottesville and the valley.
Norfolk and Virginia Beach sit behind a maze of water. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which carries US 13 for 17.6 miles from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, are chokepoints, and a backup there can hold up a driver.
Northern Virginia is different again. A driver can reach Arlington on I-395 off I-95, or on I-66, but a full trailer is awkward on a city street, so expect to meet at a lot in a larger suburb.
The curvy roads riders brag about are not truck roads. The Blue Ridge Parkway starts at Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro and bars commercial vehicles unless approved, and the Back of the Dragon, State Route 16 between Marion and Tazewell, runs about 32 miles over three mountains. Arrange to meet at a lot in Waynesboro, Marion or Tazewell and ride from there.

You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Hampton Roads is the part of the state most exposed to hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, and a snug cover or an enclosed trailer helps in any season. Open carriers are still the standard choice for most bikes. Walk around the bike with the driver, read the condition report, and photograph every side with the date. Those records matter when it arrives in Virginia.
California to Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Virginia has bridge-tunnels, city streets and a busy valley highway. Plan around the end you are in.
Bridge-Tunnel Backups
Hampton Roads has several bridge-tunnels, and a backup at one can hold up a driver. Delivery windows in Norfolk are wider for that reason.
I-81 Crashes
A single wreck on I-81 can stop trucks for hours. Pickups in Roanoke, Staunton or Harrisonburg can slip a day when it happens.
Summer Move Season
Orders cluster from May through August around Norfolk and Northern Virginia, and trailers fill. Prices rise when space is tight.
Tip: Heading to Virginia International Raceway?
MotoAmerica runs a round at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, in Halifax County just north of the North Carolina line, in August. Ask for quotes about three weeks before a race weekend, and give the carrier a pickup window of a few days.
Tip: Moving to Norfolk, Langley-Eustis or Quantico?
Naval Station Norfolk, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Pentagon in Arlington add to the flow. Name the base on the form, expect to meet the driver outside the gate, and ask every carrier about military pricing.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Clean the bike, take off soft luggage and drop the tank to about a quarter. Switch off the alarm and take dated photos around the whole bike. If you are in Northern Virginia, pick a lot in a larger suburb for the handoff. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
