California to Wisconsin Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Milwaukee runs about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier, and about $1,025 to $1,400 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $750 to $1,025 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $750 to $1,050.
Madison, on the I-90 and I-94 corridor, runs about $700 to $975 open from Los Angeles. Green Bay, up the I-43 lakeshore run, is a longer leg, so ask carriers for a quote on that city directly.
Heavier bikes and odd setups cost more. A tourer adds about $50 to $100, a sidecar rig or trike about $150 to $300, and a non-runner needs a winch.
Winter is the long season. Snow and road salt keep most Wisconsin bikes off the pavement from about November through March, so demand drops and prices often follow. Spring is the rush, usually late April through May, so get quotes in March and not the week before. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-94, I-90 and the Lakeshore Run
Between Tomah and Madison, I-94 and I-90 share the same pavement for about 92 miles. Past Portage they are joined by I-39 for a roughly 30-mile stretch. In practice it means one wide, busy road carrying nearly all the trailers between Minnesota and the Illinois line, and a single crash can back traffic up for miles. Madison, Milwaukee, Eau Claire and Wisconsin Dells all sit on or right beside those two roads, so a driver can drop a bike without leaving the highway for long.
I-43 is the second spine. It is about 192 miles long and stays entirely inside the state, running from Beloit to the edge of Green Bay. Past Milwaukee it hugs the Lake Michigan shore through Sheboygan and Manitowoc, and it is the road to the Green Bay and Appleton end of the state.
Door County is the one place where the map really matters. WIS 42 and WIS 57 are the only two state highways into Door County, and both run through Sturgeon Bay and cross the ship canal there. Beyond that, towns like Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay have tight streets, and most drivers prefer a meeting spot on the highway.
Lake towns and small north-woods villages are another story. Many of those streets are narrow, lined with trees and plowed late, and a tractor-trailer cannot always make the turn, so expect the driver to ask you to meet at a big lot, a supermarket or a gas station on the main highway.
How Quotes Work When You Ship a Motorcycle to Wisconsin
You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run this route, and the offers come back to you.
1. Send one request
Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.
2. Carriers respond
We pass your request to carriers that run the California to Wisconsin route. You can receive up to ten free quotes without calling them one at a time.
3. Compare the offers
Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can look up any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.
4. Choose your company
You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers cost roughly 40 percent more and keep rain and road salt off the bike, which helps in an April or October rain. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. Inspect the bike with the driver, read the condition report, and take your own dated photos. You will want them when the bike arrives in Wisconsin.
California to Wisconsin Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Wisconsin shipping follows the riding season. Plan around spring storage and winter salt.
Late Spring Snow
A cold April can still drop snow in the north and slow trailers on the secondary roads. Do not set a hard delivery date in early spring.
One Road Up Door County
WIS 42 and WIS 57 are the only two state highways into Door County, and both pass through Sturgeon Bay. A stalled truck there can slow everything behind it.
Spring Rush
Bikes coming out of winter storage all need to move in the same few weeks. Trailers fill and quotes rise in late April and May.
Tip: Heading to Road America?
Road America in Elkhart Lake hosts a MotoAmerica Superbike weekend in late spring, May 29 to 31 in 2026. The track sits about halfway between Milwaukee and Green Bay, so it is easy to reach from either end of the I-43 corridor. Trailers fill early for event weekends, so start looking a few weeks out.
Tip: Shipping a Harley to Milwaukee?
The Harley-Davidson Museum opened in 2008 beside the Menomonee River and holds more than 450 of the company's bikes. A Harley going to a dealer or a display moves like any other bike.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Clean the bike, clear off loose accessories, and aim for a quarter tank. Switch the alarm off and record every side in dated photos. Wash off any road salt before the bike loads. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to Wisconsin Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Wisconsin?
Most California to Wisconsin shipments take 6-9 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Wisconsin from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Milwaukee runs about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier and about $1,025 to $1,400 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $750 to $1,050. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open gets most bikes there. Enclosed costs more but keeps rain and salt off, which helps for a classic or fresh paint. The extra cost is roughly $300 to $400.
Which Wisconsin cities do carriers deliver to?
Milwaukee, Madison, Eau Claire and Wisconsin Dells are the easiest, and Green Bay and Appleton sit along I-43. Door County and north-woods villages usually mean meeting on the highway.
When is the best time to ship a bike to Wisconsin?
Get quotes in March for the spring rush, which runs late April through May. Winter shipping is often cheaper because snow and salt keep most bikes off the pavement.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Wisconsin?
Get the bike clean, pull off bags and loose items, and keep about a quarter tank. Photograph every side with the date, and tell the dispatcher about leaks or a bike that will not run.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Wisconsin or ship it?
The haul runs about 2,060 miles from Los Angeles to Milwaukee, roughly four long days. With fuel, rooms and wear, shipping the bike can be the simpler plan.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
Often not. A properly strapped bike makes the trip to Wisconsin without a crate on either kind of trailer. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400 and is mostly for rare bikes. Ask the carrier.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Wisconsin?
Yes near I-90, I-94 and I-43. In north-woods villages and Door County, the driver may ask you to meet at a big lot on the highway.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes. Reach us at 1-800-590-6492 at any hour, or send the quote form and weigh up to ten offers.
