California to Nebraska Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Omaha runs about $625 to $850 on an open carrier, and about $875 to $1,200 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $625 to $875 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $650 to $900.

A long run across the Plains puts a lot of miles on a bike.

Lincoln is about 60 miles southwest of Omaha, so the two cities are usually one leg for a driver. Los Angeles to Lincoln runs about $600 to $850 open. Grand Island and Kearney sit on I-80 and are simple stops for any carrier heading west.

Bike type moves the price. A touring rig or Gold Wing tends to add $50 to $100, trikes and sidecars add $150 to $300, and a dead bike needs a winch.

Spring and summer bring severe storms to the plains, and hail from May through September is a good reason to think about enclosed for a new or custom bike. Early August is the Sturgis wrinkle, since riders cross Nebraska to reach the rally and quotes on busy lanes can run higher. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-80 and the Platte River Road

I-80 is the only interstate that crosses Nebraska end to end, and it follows the Platte River valley for much of its length. The same corridor carried the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, and today it carries the trucks. Omaha sits at the eastern end, where I-80 crosses the Missouri River into Iowa and meets I-29 at Council Bluffs. Rural I-80 has been posted at 75 mph since 1995, and the 455 miles from Omaha to the Wyoming line make a single long driving day when nothing goes wrong.

Fly into Omaha and pick the bike up when it arrives.

Omaha has its own loops, I-480 along downtown and I-680 around the northwest side, and a driver can reach almost any part of the metro without trouble. Lincoln has a short spur, I-180, into the middle of the city.

Beyond Kearney the choices thin out. North Platte, Ogallala and Sidney see fewer trucks, and the farther you are from the interstate, the more likely you are to meet the driver at a lot on the highway. The scenic byway through the Sandhills follows Highway 2 for 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance, through grass-covered hills with few towns.

Winter snow can make I-80 slow and has closed stretches of it in the west. Leave a day or two of slack for the western end of the state.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Nebraska motorcycle shipping crate
Bike strapped onto a crate base. The crate option costs roughly $150 to $400, and few owners need it.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Hail is the Nebraska risk for an open trailer, and an enclosed trailer protects a new or custom bike from it. Open carriers are still the standard choice for most bikes. At pickup, inspect the bike with the driver and read the condition report together. Save it with your dated photos, and check both when the bike arrives in Nebraska.

California to Nebraska Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Nebraska is easy to reach on I-80 but has a few seasonal quirks. Plan around them.

Storms and Hail

A thunderstorm line can hold a trailer for an evening, and hail from May through September can damage a new or custom bike on an open trailer.

Winter on I-80

Snow can make I-80 slow and has closed stretches in the west. Add a day or two in winter.

Off-Interstate Addresses

North Platte, Ogallala, Sidney and the Sandhills see fewer trucks. Name the nearest I-80 exit and be ready to meet at a lot.

Tip: Heading to Sturgis?

Riders cross Nebraska in August, and the 2026 rally ran August 7 to 16. From Omaha it is about 550 miles to Sturgis. Ask for quotes in June or early July, before rally-season prices kick in.

Tip: Moving to Offutt?

Offutt Air Force Base is in Sarpy County, south of Omaha, and hosts U.S. Strategic Command and the 55th Wing. Tell the carrier whether the pickup is on base or in Bellevue, and ask about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Start by washing the bike and removing soft bags and mounts. Run the tank down to about a quarter, turn the alarm off, and take dated photos of each side. Name the nearest I-80 exit and say whether the last mile is gravel. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Nebraska Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Nebraska?

Most California to Nebraska shipments take 4-8 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow about two weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Nebraska from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Omaha runs about $625 to $850 on an open carrier and about $875 to $1,200 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $650 to $900. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Open is the usual pick and suits most bikes. Enclosed earns its cost for fresh paint, a classic or a valuable bike, and against Plains hail. The extra cost is roughly $250 to $350.

Which Nebraska cities do carriers deliver to?

Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and Kearney see the most bikes, all on or near I-80. North Platte and the Panhandle see fewer trucks, so allow a wider window.

Can a carrier quote Omaha and Council Bluffs together?

Yes. Council Bluffs, Iowa is across the Missouri River from Omaha, and the two are one metro for a driver. Ask carriers to quote both sides.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Nebraska?

Wash it, take off soft bags and loose items, and keep about a quarter tank. Photograph every side with the date, note leaks, and tell the dispatcher if the bike will not start.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Nebraska or ship it?

It is about 1,555 miles from Los Angeles to Omaha, usually three or four long days. Fuel, hotels and tire wear add up, so many owners ship the bike and fly.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Rarely. A bike strapped well on an open trailer, or loaded in an enclosed one, gets to Nebraska without a crate. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400 and fits show bikes and rare machines. Ask carriers about it.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Nebraska?

Usually. A driver comes to your address when the road allows it. Out on a gravel road or in the Sandhills, expect to meet at a lot in a larger town.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes, any hour. Call 1-800-590-6492, or use the quote form on this page to see up to ten offers.
