The Turnpike, I-70 and the Plains

Kansas has two roads that matter. The Kansas Turnpike is a 236-mile toll road from the Oklahoma line to Kansas City. It carries I-35 from the state line to Emporia, I-335 to Topeka, and I-70 on to Kansas City. It has been cashless since July 2024, so no one stops at a booth, and the toll is the carrier's business. Ask whether the quote already covers it.

Fly into Wichita and pick the bike up when it arrives.

I-70 is the longest interstate in the state at 424 miles. It runs from near Kanorado on the Colorado line through Goodland, Colby, Hays, Salina and Junction City to Topeka and Kansas City. I-135 runs about 96 miles to join I-70 at Salina and the turnpike at Wichita, and it connects the state's two main roads.

Wichita is the largest city, on I-35 and the turnpike, with McConnell Air Force Base about four miles southeast of downtown. The other main drop is the Kansas side of the Kansas City area, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas, where I-35, I-70 and the I-435 loop all run.

Addresses off the interstate are another matter. A road in the Flint Hills or the western plains may be too long and too soft for a trailer, so expect to meet at a lot on the highway.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Kansas motorcycle shipping crate
Most bikes ride this lane without a crate, which would add roughly $150 to $400.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Kansas storms bring hail, and open trailers give no cover, so an enclosed trailer is worth considering for a new or custom bike. At pickup, check the condition report against the bike with the driver, and add dated photos of your own. You will need both when the bike arrives in Kansas.

California to Kansas Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Kansas has simple roads and wild weather. Plan around both.

Spring Hail and Storms

Severe thunderstorms bring hail, and storms can hold a truck overnight. A new or custom bike is a good case for enclosed.

Far West Pickups

A pickup out near Goodland is the one most likely to slip in winter. Add a day or two of slack.

Dirt Roads Off the Interstate

Gravel roads in the Flint Hills and the plains are slow for a tractor-trailer. Meet the driver at a lot on a main road.

Tip: Heading to the Flint Hills Stampede?

The Flint Hills Stampede in Council Grove is a three-day gathering for dual sport and adventure riders, run by the Backroads Touring Kansas Association since 2005. Council Grove is small, about 2,100 people, so give the carrier a spot with room for a trailer.

Tip: Reporting to Fort Riley or McConnell?

Fort Riley is home to the 1st Infantry Division, and McConnell Air Force Base to the 22nd Air Refueling Wing. Orders can come with little notice, so ask for quotes as soon as you have a report date, and ask about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Clean the bike, take off whatever is loose, and run the tank down to a quarter or less. Switch off the alarm and shoot dated photos of every side. Tell the carrier whether the address is on pavement and which highway is closest. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Kansas from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Wichita runs about $575 to $800 on an open carrier and about $800 to $1,125 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $650 to $900. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Which Kansas cities do carriers deliver to?

Wichita, Topeka, Overland Park and Kansas City see the most bikes, and Dodge City and Salina are on the main roads west. Gravel roads may mean meeting the driver at a lot.

Do I pay the Kansas Turnpike toll?

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Kansas?

Wash the bike, take off loose gear and soft bags, and leave a quarter tank or less. Take dated photos from each side, and let the dispatcher know about any leak or non-runner.
