California to Minnesota Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Minneapolis runs about $700 to $975 on an open carrier, and about $975 to $1,375 enclosed. A San Francisco pickup costs about the same at $700 to $975 open. Rochester, in the southeast, comes in near $700 to $950.
Duluth is the longer reach. It is the end of the line for I-35, about 155 miles up the road from the Cities, so a carrier unloading in Minneapolis has to decide whether to run another 150 or so miles for one bike. Duluth runs about $725 to $1,025 open, and a drop there sometimes costs a little more or waits for a truck that is already headed that way.
The bike changes the price. A big tourer usually adds $50 to $100, a trike or sidecar adds $150 to $300, and a bike that does not run needs a winch. Mention it when you ask for quotes. Mention it when you ask for quotes.
Snow decides the calendar. From about November until the spring thaw, ice on the interstates slows trucks, and a storm can stall a trailer for a day or two. April and May are when bikes come back from the southern states, and trailers heading north fill up. Fall and winter are often cheaper outside snowbird lanes. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-94, I-35 and I-90 Into Minnesota
Three interstates carry most of the traffic. I-94 comes in from North Dakota at Moorhead and from Wisconsin at the St. Croix River, covering 259 miles inside Minnesota. I-35 brings bikes up from Iowa. I-90 crosses the bottom of the state from South Dakota through Albert Lea, 276 miles in all. I-94 and I-35 both run through the Twin Cities, so a delivery in Minneapolis or St. Paul is about as easy as it gets.
A tractor-trailer carrying eight or ten motorcycles does not want to leave the highway for long. In the Twin Cities, suburbs near the interstates such as Maple Grove, Burnsville or Woodbury work better than a house on a dead-end street in south Minneapolis. I-35 splits at Burnsville into I-35W through Minneapolis and I-35E through St. Paul, and drivers pick whichever leg is moving.
Rochester is easier than Duluth. US-52 runs through the city and I-90 skirts its southern edge. Out past Brainerd or around Bemidji, expect to meet at a larger town, and name the nearest city when you ask for quotes.
Road salt is worth a thought. A bike that sat through a Minnesota winter has a lot of it underneath, and it is worth a wash before it goes on a trailer.

4. Choose your company
You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps in snow country and over a week of weather. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. Walk around the bike with the driver at pickup and check each line of the condition report. Your photos and that report are the record to check when the bike arrives in Minnesota.
California to Minnesota Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Minnesota has a harsh winter and a busy fall. Plan around both.
Winter Storms
Ice on the interstates slows trucks, and a storm can stall a trailer for a day or two. Give a December to March pickup an extra week of slack.
Spring Rush
April and May bring bikes back from Arizona and Florida, and quotes climb on those lanes. Book early for those weeks.
Lake Country Addresses
Past Brainerd or around Bemidji, a trailer may not reach your road. Expect to meet at a larger town.
Tip: Heading to the Hiawatha Rally?
The Hiawatha Rally is held around the end of May at Money Creek Haven Campground near Houston, in the southeast corner. It is hosted by the BMW Motorcycle Owners Club of Minnesota, all brands are welcome, and 2026 was its 49th year. Houston is small, so ask the carrier early where it can meet you.
Tip: Moving on Orders?
The main military sites are Guard installations, Camp Ripley near Little Falls and the Duluth Air National Guard Base. Request quotes as soon as you have a report date, and ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Remove soft luggage and mounts, run the tank down to about a quarter, and switch off the alarm. Photograph every angle with the date. Wash off any road salt, and name the nearest large town if you live up north. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to Minnesota Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Minnesota?
Most California to Minnesota shipments take 4 to 8 days to the Twin Cities once the bike is on the truck, and a little longer to Duluth. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Minnesota from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Minneapolis runs about $700 to $975 on an open carrier and about $975 to $1,375 enclosed. Duluth runs higher at about $725 to $1,025 open. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open is standard for most bikes. In winter, or for a classic or valuable bike, enclosed is worth the extra. The extra cost is roughly $275 to $400.
Which Minnesota cities do carriers deliver to?
Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth see the most bikes. St. Cloud, Moorhead and the towns along I-94 are easy to reach, and lake country takes more planning.
Why does Duluth cost more than Minneapolis?
It sits about 155 miles up I-35 from the Twin Cities. A carrier has to run those extra miles for one bike or wait for a truck already headed that way.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Minnesota?
Wash off road dirt and salt, take off soft bags and loose gear, and leave about a quarter tank. Take dated photos, note leaks, and tell the dispatcher if the bike does not run.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Minnesota or ship it?
The ride runs about 1,925 miles from Los Angeles to Minneapolis, usually three or four long days. Fuel, motels and wear on your chain and tires add up, so shipping is worth a quote.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
In most cases, no. Properly strapped, a bike crosses the country to Minnesota on an open or enclosed trailer. A crate adds roughly $150 to $400 and is mainly for rare or show bikes. Ask carriers if they offer it.

Yes, for most addresses. Suburbs near the interstates are easy. Out in lake country, the driver may ask you to meet in a larger town.
