Ship a Motorcycle to Illinois: Chicago and Everywhere Else
If your bike is going to the Chicago area, expect a short phone call before delivery day. Tractor-trailers do not fit on every street in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park or the older suburbs, and an apartment block with no loading zone is a poor place to unload a motorcycle. Ask the carrier whether the driver can reach your street or wants to meet at a big lot nearby, such as a grocery store, a home improvement store or an industrial park. Pick one that is open when the truck arrives.
Suburban addresses are usually easier than city blocks. Ask for the exact suburb when you get quotes, because a stop 40 miles from the Loop can be priced and scheduled differently from one downtown.
Outside the metro, bikes arrive on whichever interstate is closest. I-55 serves Bloomington-Normal and Springfield. I-74 serves Peoria and Champaign. I-39 and I-90 serve Rockford. A farm south of Mattoon is another matter, and the driver may ask you to come to the nearest exit.
Wherever you live, someone has to be on hand at the drop to inspect the bike and sign the driver's paperwork. Planning a move? Lanes worth quoting into the state: Florida to Illinois, Texas to Illinois and California to Illinois. There is also a page just for Chicago.
Illinois Motorcycle Shipping Rates and Transit Times
Last updated: October 2026
Distance sets most of the price. For a standard bike riding an open trailer, figure $325 to $450 at 250 miles and $450 to $600 at 750 miles. At 1,500 miles it is $600 to $850. Per mile, long hauls are cheaper, and doubling the distance does not come close to doubling the price.
Going enclosed costs about 30% to 50% more. Crating the bike runs $150 to $400 extra, a trike or sidecar $150 to $300, and a big tourer like a Gold Wing often $50 to $100. The table lists common Illinois lanes. It shows open transport, and the days are time on the road after pickup, with one to three more for scheduling.

How Getting Quotes Works
You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run Illinois lanes, and the offers come back to you.
1. Send one request
Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.
2. Carriers respond
We pass your request to carriers that move motorcycles in and out of Illinois. You can receive up to ten free quotes without spending hours calling companies one by one.
3. Compare the offers
Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can check any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.
4. Choose your company
You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
Shipping a Motorcycle From Illinois
Chicago is a good place to start a trip, and short hauls to Milwaukee, Indianapolis or Detroit are worth a quote. Illinois to Wisconsin is a run of about 90 miles from Chicago to Milwaukee, and open-trailer quotes run about $300 to $400.
Long hauls are the usual job. Fall is when Chicago-area owners send bikes to Florida and Arizona for the winter. Chicago to Orlando is about 1,155 miles, and Illinois to Florida is the lane to book early in the fall. The other big one is Illinois to Arizona, about 1,695 miles to Phoenix.
Downstate pickups need patience. For a pickup in Springfield or Peoria headed to Texas or Colorado, give the carrier a window of several days instead of one date. Near St. Louis, Metro East towns such as Edwardsville and Belleville sit just across the river from Missouri, so quote both sides.
Illinois Motorcycle Transport on I-55, I-57, I-80 and the Tollways
I-55 is the longest backbone. It covers about 294 miles in Illinois, from the Missouri line at East St. Louis up to Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, and it passes close to Springfield, Bloomington-Normal and Joliet. It sits on much of the old Route 66 roadbed. I-57 takes a more eastern line from Chicago down through Champaign, Effingham and Marion to Cairo at the southern tip of the state. Between the two, I-74 links Peoria, Bloomington and Champaign, and I-72 runs from Champaign across to Springfield and on toward the Mississippi at Hannibal.
Rockford is the main stop in the north, on I-90, which then runs the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (the old Northwest Tollway) into the Chicago suburbs. I-39 heads south from there to Bloomington-Normal. Across the top of the state, I-80 runs about 164 miles from the Quad Cities past Joliet and the south suburbs to the Indiana line.
The Illinois Tollway has been cash-free since 2020, so a driver without a transponder pays online or by plate. That is the carrier's business, not yours.
East of Chicago, the Illinois line is the gateway to Indiana, and bikes headed to Indiana and back use the same interstates.
Motorcycle Shipping to Illinois by Season
Winter is the main obstacle. Chicago's O'Hare averages about 38 inches of snow a year, falling from October through April, and January is the coldest month. Heavy snow can slow trucks on I-55, I-80 and I-90.
Fall and winter quotes outside the snowbird lanes are often cheaper. A bike going south from Chicago to Florida in the cold months is a snowbird lane, so expect normal prices there.
Spring is the rush, when riders want their bikes back or shipped in, and quotes run higher on popular lanes. Thunderstorms are common in Chicago from March through September, peaking in June, so give the carrier a few days of slack.
Route 66 and the Springfield Mile
Route 66 starts in Illinois. The National Park Service puts its eastern end at Grant Park in Chicago, and the road covers about 300 miles in the state before it crosses into Missouri. Much of it runs beside or under I-55 now, but the National Park Service has paid for restoration grants in towns like Dwight (a Texaco station), Odell (a Standard Oil station) and Atlanta (Palm's Grill), and riders drive the old road on purpose. If you plan a Route 66 ride, one option is to ship the bike to Chicago and ride west, then ship it home from St. Louis at the end.
The Springfield Mile is a flat-track race held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield in September. For a bike delivered there, start asking for quotes a month out. Event weeks can push a quote up.
If you are heading to Sturgis in the Black Hills, ask the carrier about a round trip so you can compare one-way and return pricing.
Moving a Bike to or From Naval Station Great Lakes
Naval Station Great Lakes sits near North Chicago, along Lake Michigan, and is home to the Navy's only boot camp, Recruit Training Command. If you are moving on orders, start collecting quotes the day you get a report date, and say whether the bike sits on base or in town. A military discount is something to ask each carrier about directly.
Illinois Motorcycle Shipping Challenges and Tips
Illinois has three recurring snags, and three ways around them.
Tight City Streets
A full-size trailer may not fit on many blocks in the older Chicago neighborhoods. Ask the carrier about a store lot or industrial park nearby.
Winter Roads
Snow and ice slow trucks on I-55, I-80 and I-90 in winter. Build in extra days.
Thin Downstate Service
Springfield, Peoria and the small towns around them are farther from the Chicago hub. Ask how soon each carrier can schedule a pickup, and give a few days of flexibility.
Tip: Pick a Meeting Lot Ahead of Time
In Chicago, choose a big, open lot within a few miles and tell the dispatcher before the truck is loaded. It saves a day of phone tag.
Tip: Book Early for the Spring Rush
If the bike needs to be home by May, request quotes in March. Spring prices can drift up.
Tip: Winterize Before You Ship
If the bike has been in storage since December, start it, check the battery and fix any leaks before pickup. Take dated photos from all sides. More in the prep guide.
Illinois Motorcycle Shipping FAQs
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Illinois?
A standard bike on an open trailer typically runs $325 to $450 for a 250-mile haul, $500 to $675 at 1,000 miles and $725 to $1,000 at 2,000 miles. Enclosed adds roughly 40%. Season, city and bike size move the final number.
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from Los Angeles to Chicago?
It is roughly 2,020 miles, and a driver needs 6 to 9 days on the road. Scheduling the pickup takes another day to three, so think in terms of two weeks start to finish.
Can a carrier deliver to my apartment in Chicago?
Often not to the door. A tractor-trailer may not fit on the street or be allowed to stop in front of the building. Ask the carrier, and expect to meet at a large lot nearby if not. Mention your address when you request quotes.
Do snow and ice stop motorcycle shipping in Illinois?
They can slow it. Snow falls in Chicago from October through April, and a heavy storm can hold a trailer for a day or two. Allow extra days and give the carrier a pickup window.
Is shipping from Springfield or Peoria harder than from Chicago?
It can be. Chicago is the hub, so ask each carrier how soon it can pick up in Springfield or Peoria. Offering a window of several dates helps.
Can I ship my bike to Chicago and ride Route 66 from there?
Yes. Route 66 begins at Grant Park in Chicago and runs about 300 miles through Illinois. Some riders ship the bike to the city and pick it up near the start. Ask the driver about a meeting lot, since downtown streets are tight.
Can I ship a motorcycle to or from Naval Station Great Lakes?
Tell the carrier whether pickup or delivery is on base or in North Chicago. Get quotes as soon as orders arrive, and put the discount question to each carrier.
What if my motorcycle does not run?
Tell the dispatcher up front. Loading a dead bike takes a winch or a ramp and extra hands, and a carrier may charge for that. If you wait until the driver shows up, expect delays.
