Ship a Motorcycle to Iowa From Anywhere in the Country

Look at where your delivery address sits relative to I-80, because that is the first thing a dispatcher checks. I-80 enters at Council Bluffs on the Missouri River and leaves over the Mississippi on the Fred Schwengel Memorial Bridge near LeClaire, passing the Des Moines area, Iowa City and the north edge of Davenport on the way. I-35 runs north and south and shares the road with I-80 through the Des Moines area. Those are the easiest places to get a quote for.

Farm country is the other side of it. A gravel county road in the middle of a cornfield is not a place for a long trailer, so ask the carrier whether the driver will come to you or wants to meet at a lot on the nearest highway. What matters is that someone is there to look over the bike and sign.

Council Bluffs deserves a mention. It is across the Missouri River from Omaha, so it is worth asking carriers to quote both sides.

Moving here from another state? The Illinois to Iowa and Texas to Iowa lanes are worth quoting, and California to Iowa is the long one.

Iowa Motorcycle Shipping Rates and Transit Times

Last updated: October 2026

Short Iowa hauls are cheap. A standard bike on an open trailer moving about 250 miles costs $325 to $450, and 500 miles is $375 to $525. At 1,000 miles you are looking at $500 to $675, at 1,500 miles $600 to $850, and at 2,000 miles $725 to $1,000. Rates per mile fall as the distance grows.

An enclosed trailer adds roughly 30% to 50%. Add $150 to $400 for crating, $150 to $300 for a trike or sidecar, and $50 to $100 for a big touring bike. The routes below are among the more common ones from Iowa. Days are counted from the moment of pickup, and the scheduling lead time is on top of that.

How Getting Quotes Works

You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run Iowa lanes, and the offers come back to you.

1. Send one request

Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.

2. Carriers respond

We pass your request to carriers that move motorcycles in and out of Iowa. You can receive up to ten free quotes without spending hours calling companies one by one.

3. Compare the offers

Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can check any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.

4. Choose your company

You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.

Sending a Bike Out of Iowa

Eastbound and westbound are the easy directions. Chicago is about 330 miles from Des Moines, and Davenport to Chicago is only about 170. The Iowa to Illinois run is short, 1 to 3 days on the road once a carrier has your bike, and the bridges at Davenport are the usual way across the Mississippi.

Going south in the fall is a common request. A Des Moines to Phoenix trip is about 1,390 miles, and Cedar Rapids to Orlando is about 1,275. Owners with winter homes often move the bike ahead of the cold, so ask for quotes early in the fall.

Then there is Sturgis. From Sioux City it is about 455 miles to Sturgis, up I-29 to I-90 and then west. The Iowa to South Dakota route is the one to quote, and the Sturgis page has the rally basics.

Whatever the direction, a three-day pickup window gives carriers more room to fit you in.

Iowa Motorcycle Transport Along I-80, I-35 and I-29

I-80 is the main line. Iowa 80 in Walcott, near Davenport, calls itself the largest truck stop in the world, and it is a landmark you can name as a meeting spot.

I-35 runs about 219 miles from the Missouri line near Lamoni to the Minnesota line, taking in Des Moines, Ames and Mason City. I-35 and I-80 share the road through the Des Moines area, and I-235 serves downtown, so ask the carrier where it wants to meet.

I-380 runs about 73 miles from Coralville, next to Iowa City, through Cedar Rapids to Waterloo. Dubuque and the northeast corner are away from I-80 and I-35, so ask each carrier how long a pickup there will take.

Western Iowa follows I-29 beside the Missouri River from Council Bluffs to Sioux City, part of about 152 miles of I-29 in the state. Give the carrier a few days of window.

Motorcycle Shipping to Iowa by Season

Winter slows trucks. Ice on I-80 or I-35 can hold a trailer for a day, and county roads can be worse. If you are shipping in January or February, assume the delivery date is a window and keep your schedule loose.

Spring brings the opposite problem: lots of owners want their bikes now, and prices on popular lanes climb in peak weeks.

Harvest is a quieter hazard. In the fall, farm traffic can fill rural roads, and a pickup on a farm lane may need a different meeting spot. Summer thunderstorms are common, and a good tie-down job handles rain fine, but an enclosed trailer is a sensible choice for a bike with fresh paint or a vintage finish.

Fall and winter are often cheaper outside snowbird lanes.

Iowa Riders, Sturgis and Events That Have Changed

Anamosa used to be the answer here. The National Motorcycle Museum, founded there in 1989 and home to hundreds of vintage bikes, closed for good in September 2023, a nonprofit that could not recover from money trouble the pandemic made worse. If an older guide or forum post sends you to its Vintage Rally, bike show or swap meet, those events were tied to the museum, so check before you plan a trip or ship a bike for one.

For a big gathering, Iowa riders look out of state. The Sturgis rally in South Dakota runs in August, and the table below prices Sioux City to Sturgis at about 455 miles, 1 to 3 days on the road. Rally weeks tighten trailer space on a lane, so request quotes early and give the carrier a pickup window of several days around your dates.

The same goes for a shorter trip. If you are shipping a bike to a friend in the Black Hills or to a rental there, the Iowa to South Dakota page has the lane, and the how-to guide walks through the steps.

Iowa Motorcycle Shipping Challenges and Tips

Distance from the interstate is the main variable. Weather is the second.

Gravel and Farm Lanes

Trailers may not fit on narrow county roads. Ask the carrier whether it will come to you, or plan to bring the bike to a lot on a paved highway.

Winter on I-80 and I-35

Ice and snow can hold a trailer for a day or more. Treat delivery dates from December to March as a window.

Far Corners of the State

Dubuque and the northeast, and small towns far from I-80 or I-35, may take longer to schedule. A meeting point in a bigger town can save days.

Tip: Pick a Town on the Interstate

If you live off the main roads, offer a meeting point near I-80, I-35 or I-29. Ask each carrier whether that changes the quote.

Tip: Book Early for Sturgis

Rally weeks cost more and trailers fill. Request quotes three weeks ahead and keep a few days open on either side.

Tip: Check the Bike Over

Photograph every side, remove loose bags, and ask the carrier how much fuel to leave. The preparation guide has the full list.

Iowa Motorcycle Shipping FAQs

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Iowa?

From Chicago, about 330 miles to Des Moines, the open-trailer range is $350 to $475 for a standard bike. Dallas to Des Moines is about 690 miles at $425 to $600. Enclosed adds roughly 40%, and a quote will reflect the season and the bike.

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Iowa?

Los Angeles to Cedar Rapids is about 1,815 miles, normally 4 to 8 days on the road after pickup. Count another one to three days for the carrier to schedule the pickup.

Can a carrier deliver to a farm or rural address?

Sometimes, but not always to the door. A long trailer may not be able to turn around on a gravel road, so the driver may ask you to meet at a nearby paved lot. Mention your address when you request quotes.

Are the Quad Cities one pickup area?

Davenport and Bettendorf are in Iowa, and Moline and Rock Island are across the Mississippi in Illinois. Tell the dispatcher which side of the river you are on when you request quotes.

When is the cheapest time to ship from Iowa?

Fall and winter are often cheaper outside the snowbird lanes. Weather can slow a winter pickup, so allow extra days.

Can I ship a bike from Iowa to Sturgis?

Yes. The table prices Sioux City to Sturgis at about 455 miles and 1 to 3 days on the road. Request quotes early, because the Sturgis rally is in August and rally weeks cost more.

Is open or enclosed better for Iowa?

Open covers most bikes. Enclosed is worth the extra for a custom paint job, a classic, or a winter shipment.

Does my bike have to run to be shipped?

No, but say so in the quote request. A bike that will not start needs a winch to load, and a carrier may charge for that. It is cheaper to find out up front.
