California to West Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Charleston runs about $800 to $1,100 on an open carrier, and about $1,125 to $1,550 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $775 to $1,100 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $825 to $1,150.

A cross-country trip ends in the mountains of West Virginia.

Huntington sits at the western edge of the state on I-64, on the Ohio River, and runs about $775 to $1,075 open from Los Angeles. Morgantown, in the north on I-79, is reached from the Pittsburgh side, so ask carriers for a quote on that city directly.

Plan for extras on a heavy or unusual bike. A Gold Wing adds around $50 to $100, a trike or sidecar around $150 to $300, and a bike that will not start needs a winch.

Winter is the problem, since snow and ice on the mountain grades can slow a trailer. If you can wait, winter quotes outside the snowbird lanes are often below the summer numbers. See our money-saving tips for more.

The Turnpike, I-64 and the Hollows

Charleston is the easy one, and most first-time shippers start there. I-64 and I-77 run together there, and the Kanawha River valley is wide enough that a trailer can get near most addresses. The West Virginia Turnpike is the spine of the south, about 88 miles from near Princeton to Charleston, with three toll barriers, and I-77 follows it. I-64 is the other long road, about 189 miles from the Kentucky line at Kenova through Huntington, Charleston and Beckley to the Virginia line near White Sulphur Springs.

Fly into Charleston and pick the bike up when it arrives.

The north is different. Morgantown sits on I-79, close to the Pennsylvania line, so a bike from Pittsburgh or the Northeast arrives from that side. Out east, Martinsburg is on I-81, roughly 63 miles from Washington and 73 from Baltimore.

Corridor H, or US 48, is the newer east-west road. It runs 157 miles from Weston, at I-79, to Strasburg, Virginia, through rugged mountains and two national forests, and some stretches are still two-lane. A driver heading toward Davis or Wardensville may be on a slower road.

A farm up a county road, or a house in a narrow valley, may be too tight for a full-size trailer. If you are not on a state highway, expect to meet the driver at a lot on one. A gas station with room to turn is the usual choice.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

The crate base shown here is optional and adds roughly $150 to $400 to the bill.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps through mountain weather and for fresh paint or a high-value bike. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. Go through the condition report line by line with the driver before the bike goes on the trailer. Hold on to it and your photos for delivery in West Virginia.

California to West Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

West Virginia is mountains and narrow valleys. Plan around where your address sits.

Narrow Valleys

A county road up a hollow can be too tight for a full-size car hauler. The handoff usually happens on a state highway.

Mountain Weather

Snow, ice and fog on the grades can slow a pickup by a day. Winter schedules need a wider window.

Slow Sections

Parts of US 48 are still two lanes, and the turnpike has toll barriers. Drivers allow extra time on both.

Tip: Heading to Bridge Day?

Bridge Day is held on the third Saturday of October at the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville. The bridge closes to cars for the day, so expect delays and book early. Plan the delivery for a lot on your own side of the gorge and ask the carrier how it handles the closure.

Tip: Shipping for a Week in the Mountains?

Some riders ship a bike to the area for a week of mountain roads and fly home, which works as long as someone is at the delivery address to sign for it. Ask carriers whether the delivery can be a stop near Charleston or Beckley instead of a back road.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Clean the bike and take off bags and phone mounts. Aim for a quarter tank, disable the alarm and take dated photos of every angle. Name the closest town and say if you are on a state highway. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to West Virginia Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to West Virginia?

Most California to West Virginia shipments take 6-9 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to West Virginia from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Charleston runs about $800 to $1,100 on an open carrier and about $1,125 to $1,550 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $825 to $1,150. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Open works for most bikes. Enclosed makes sense through mountain winter weather and for a classic or fresh paint. The extra cost is roughly $325 to $450.

Which West Virginia cities do carriers deliver to?

Charleston is the easiest, and Huntington, Morgantown, Wheeling and Parkersburg are on the interstates. Hollows and county roads usually mean meeting at a lot on a state highway.

Does Bridge Day affect delivery?

Yes. The New River Gorge Bridge closes to cars on the third Saturday of October, so a trailer going through Fayetteville that weekend can face delays.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to West Virginia?

Get the bike washed, pull off saddlebags and mounts, and keep the fuel to about a quarter tank. Take dated photos all around, and report leaks or a non-runner.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to West Virginia or ship it?

That is about 2,345 miles from Los Angeles to Charleston, around five long days on a bike. Ride it if the trip is the point, and ship it if the destination is.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Usually no. Open and enclosed trailers both carry bikes to West Virginia without crates. A crate runs roughly $150 to $400 and suits show-quality bikes. Ask carriers whether it is available.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to West Virginia?

Yes in Charleston and along the interstates. Up a hollow or county road, expect the driver to ask you to meet on a state highway.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes, always. Dial 1-800-590-6492 or fill in the form to compare up to ten quotes from carriers.
