California to Maryland Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

From Los Angeles to Baltimore, a standard cruiser or sport bike runs about $850 to $1,175 on an open carrier and about $1,200 to $1,650 enclosed. Annapolis comes in a little higher at $875 to $1,200 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs closer to $900 to $1,250.

Nearly 2,600 miles is a lot of road to put on a bike.

The bike changes the price. Expect $50 to $100 more for a full-dress tourer and $150 to $300 more for a trike or sidecar. A non-runner needs a winch, and carriers need to know. Mention it when you ask for quotes so nothing changes at pickup.

Winter is the cheaper window on lanes that are not snowbird routes. Late fall through February is often below summer, so a rider with no deadline can save real money by waiting. September is the exception near the coast, when Ocean City hosts its bike week and trailers fill. See our money-saving tips for more.

Where a Trailer Can Stop in Maryland

I-95 is the longest interstate in the state at 110 miles, and two pieces of it matter to a trailer. Under Baltimore it dips into the eight-lane Fort McHenry Tunnel, and the Millard Tydings Bridge over the Susquehanna carries crosswind warning signs. South of the city, I-95 shares the Capital Beltway (I-495) from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to College Park.

Fly into BWI and pick the bike up when it arrives.

Coming from the west, a truck uses I-70 or I-68. I-70 climbs from Baltimore through Frederick to Hagerstown, where it meets I-81, and I-68 continues on to Cumberland. Hagerstown is a useful pickup point because those roads meet there. I-695 rings Baltimore, and I-97 runs down to Annapolis.

Baltimore proper and Annapolis can be harder. Canton is a neighborhood of turn-of-the-century rowhouses, and Annapolis has a historic district around the State House. A full-size trailer may struggle on blocks like those. Expect the driver to suggest a big parking lot nearby, often just off the Beltway or I-97.

The Eastern Shore is a separate delivery. For Salisbury, Easton or Ocean City, a truck either crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on US-50 or comes down the peninsula through Delaware on US-13. US-50 backs up in summer, mostly eastbound on Friday evenings and westbound on Sunday afternoons.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Maryland motorcycle shipping crate
Bikes that are crated ride on a base like this one, at roughly $150 to $400. Most skip it on this lane.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, and on a trip of more than 2,600 miles they cover the bike for the whole run. Most bikes ride open without trouble. Before the driver loads the bike, go over it together and check the condition report. Your dated photos and that report are what you compare against when the bike reaches Maryland.

California to Maryland Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Maryland is small, but a few things can change a delivery. Plan for them.

Rowhouse and Historic Streets

Canton in Baltimore and the Annapolis historic district have blocks a full-size trailer may not fit. Expect a meeting point off the Beltway or I-97.

Summer Traffic on US-50

The road to the Bay Bridge and Ocean City backs up on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Ask for a weekday delivery to the Eastern Shore.

Winter in the West

Western Maryland gets over 100 inches of snow a year in the mountains, while the coast gets about 9. A storm near I-68 can hold a driver while the east stays clear.

Tip: Book Early for Ocean City

Ocean City hosts its bike week each September, billed as OC Rock & Ride in 2026 on September 9 to 12. Rates on busy lanes run higher in rally week, so book two to three weeks ahead.

Tip: Moving to Fort Meade or Annapolis?

Fort Meade, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Joint Base Andrews, Patuxent River and the Naval Academy are all in Maryland. Ask where the driver is allowed to meet you, and have an off-base lot ready as a backup. Ask each carrier about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Clean the bike, remove loose gear, and run the tank down to a quarter or less. Turn off the alarm and photograph all sides with the date. Give the carrier your exact address and say whether it is on a narrow rowhouse block. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Maryland Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Maryland?

Most California to Maryland shipments take 7 to 10 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Maryland from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Baltimore runs about $850 to $1,175 on an open carrier and about $1,200 to $1,650 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $900 to $1,250. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

For most bikes, open does the job. Enclosed is worth a look for a classic, fresh paint or a bike headed to a show. The extra cost is roughly $350 to $475.

Which Maryland cities do carriers deliver to?

Baltimore, Annapolis, Frederick and Hagerstown see the most bikes. Suburbs off I-95 and the Beltway are the easiest drops, and the Eastern Shore is a separate delivery.

Can a carrier deliver to Ocean City?

Yes, but it is a separate trip. A truck crosses the Bay Bridge on US-50 or comes down the peninsula on US-13. In September, bike week fills trailers, so book early.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Maryland?

Clean the bike, take off loose accessories and run the tank down to a quarter or less. Dated photos from all sides help, and the dispatcher should know about leaks or a non-runner.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Maryland or ship it?

Riding is about 2,630 miles from Los Angeles to Baltimore, which most riders cover in five or six long days. Between fuel, lodging and tires, a shipping quote is often close. Ride only if you want the trip.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Most riders skip it. Open and enclosed trailers carry bikes to Maryland every week without crates. A crate costs roughly $150 to $400 and fits show-quality bikes best. Ask when you get quotes.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Maryland?

In most cases, yes. In rowhouse blocks and historic districts the truck may not fit, and the driver will suggest a lot near the Beltway or a main road.

Yes. 1-800-590-6492 is answered 24 hours a day, and the form at the top of this page works at any hour.
