California to Pennsylvania Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Philadelphia runs about $875 to $1,200 on an open carrier, and about $1,225 to $1,675 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $875 to $1,200 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $900 to $1,250.
Pittsburgh sits at the west end of the state and is the cheaper drop from Los Angeles, at about $800 to $1,125 open. Harrisburg runs about $850 to $1,175. It is where I-81 and I-83 meet, close to the Turnpike, so a pickup or drop there is simpler for a driver than one in a mountain town.
Weight and condition move the quote. Tourers add roughly $50 to $100, trikes and sidecars roughly $150 to $300, and a bike that will not start needs a winch on the truck.
Snow is the main seasonal factor, and winter storms are the usual reason a pickup slips. If you can choose, ship before the snow starts and give the carrier a window of several days. Gettysburg Bike Week in July tightens trailers around the rally. See our money-saving tips for more.

The Turnpike, I-80 and the Ridges Between
The Pennsylvania Turnpike runs about 360 miles from the Ohio line to the Delaware River at the New Jersey line. I-76 follows it from Ohio to Valley Forge, and I-70 shares it between New Stanton and Breezewood. Four tunnels cut through the Appalachians along the way: Allegheny Mountain, Tuscarora Mountain, Kittatinny Mountain and Blue Mountain. I-80 crosses the state from Ohio to New Jersey, and I-81 runs northeast through Harrisburg, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.
The east end has Philadelphia, Allentown and the Lehigh Valley, reached by I-95, I-76 and I-78. The west end has Pittsburgh, reached on the Turnpike and I-376, with I-79 passing just outside the city. Between them lies a long stretch of ridges and small towns. Addresses along those roads are the easiest for a carrier to reach, and a delivery in Erie, Williamsport or the Poconos can mean a driver leaving the main routes.
Pittsburgh is built on steep hills, and many of its neighborhoods have two-lane streets on slopes. Philadelphia is a city of row houses. If your address is on one of those streets, expect the driver to suggest a parking lot a few blocks away. Pick a place with room to swing a truck, and go there yourself to check the bike over.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps over a long haul in winter weather and for fresh paint or a high-value bike. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. When the driver arrives, inspect the bike together and read the condition report closely. Save it and your dated photos to check against in Pennsylvania.
California to Pennsylvania Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Pennsylvania has lake snow, mountain ridges and hilly old neighborhoods. Plan around the one nearest your address.
Lake-Effect Snow
Storms off Lake Erie can bury Erie and the northwest corner. A driver may have to wait out a closure, so pad winter dates there.
Mountain Ridges
I-80 and the Turnpike cross mountain country, and winter weather there can slow a whole load.
Hilly Old Neighborhoods
Steep streets in Pittsburgh and row-house blocks in Philadelphia can block a trailer. Meet the driver at a lot nearby.
Tip: Heading to Gettysburg Bike Week?
Gettysburg Bike Week is held in July near Gettysburg. If you plan to ship a bike in or out for the rally, ask for quotes early and give the carrier a window of several days.
Tip: Moving to Carlisle or Fort Indiantown Gap?
Carlisle Barracks, Fort Indiantown Gap northeast of Harrisburg and Tobyhanna Army Depot in Coolbaugh Township all generate moves. Ask where the driver may meet you if the gate is restricted, and ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Pull off loose gear, wash the bike, and fill the tank only to about a quarter. Switch the alarm off and date-stamp photos of all sides. Tell the carrier your town, not just the state. A small town up in the mountains is a different job than Harrisburg. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to Pennsylvania Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Pennsylvania?
Most California to Pennsylvania shipments take 7-10 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Pennsylvania from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Philadelphia runs about $875 to $1,200 on an open carrier and about $1,225 to $1,675 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $900 to $1,250. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open is the usual choice. For a classic, fresh paint or a winter move, enclosed is worth the extra. The extra cost is roughly $350 to $475.
Which Pennsylvania cities do carriers deliver to?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Allentown are the easiest. Erie, Williamsport, Scranton and the Poconos can mean a driver leaving the main routes, so allow extra time.
Will a truck reach my row house in Philadelphia?
Often not. If your address is on a narrow row-house street, expect the driver to suggest a parking lot a few blocks away.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Pennsylvania?
Start with a clean bike, nothing loose on it and about a quarter tank. Photograph every angle with the date, write down any leaks, and say so if the bike does not start.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Pennsylvania or ship it?
That works out to about 2,700 miles from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, typically five long days. Fuel, motels and tire wear pile up, so get a shipping quote to compare.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
In most cases, no. Bikes travel to Pennsylvania on open or enclosed trailers without crates. If you want one for a show bike, plan on roughly $150 to $400 more and ask which carriers offer it.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Pennsylvania?
Generally yes. In Philadelphia row-house blocks and steep Pittsburgh streets the truck may not fit, and the driver will suggest a lot nearby.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes. Call 1-800-590-6492 at any time, or use the form here to compare up to ten carriers.
