California to Massachusetts Motorcycle Shipping

California Massachusetts

Boston is close to 3,000 miles from Los Angeles, and Boston is also the hardest drop in the state. California to Massachusetts motorcycle shipping runs 7 to 10 days on the road. We send your request to carriers in our network and you can get up to ten free quotes. If you need to ship a motorcycle to Massachusetts from California, plan on a meeting point, because a tractor-trailer has no business inside the Boston street grid. Worcester and Springfield are far easier. Fill in the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 whenever it suits you. For the state itself, see our Massachusetts Motorcycle Shipping page.

California to Massachusetts Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Boston runs about $925 to $1,300 on an open carrier, and about $1,300 to $1,825 enclosed. San Diego comes out about the same at $925 to $1,300 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs $950 to $1,325.

Three thousand miles is a lot of road. Shipping keeps them off your odometer.

Worcester is a little closer and a lot easier for a driver, at about $925 to $1,275 open. Carriers are already passing there, since I-290 and I-190 meet and the Pike is a few miles south. Springfield is on the same footing, with I-91 crossing the Pike at West Springfield.

The bike moves the price. Heavy touring bikes often add $50 to $100, and trikes and sidecar rigs add $150 to $300. If the bike does not run, tell the dispatcher so the truck brings a winch. Mention it up front.

Snow rules the calendar. Many riders put the bike away for winter and pull it out in spring, and traffic follows. Quotes outside the snowbird lanes often drop from fall through winter, and peak season usually pushes a quote up. If the bike is going to the Cape for the summer, ask in early spring. The Pike, I-93 and Meeting Points in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Turnpike is I-90, about 138 miles from Boston to the New York line, and it is the spine of the state. It meets I-290 at Auburn, just south of Worcester, I-495 farther east, and I-91 at West Springfield. I-93 is the Boston route north and south and passes under downtown in the O'Neill Tunnel. I-495 is a second ring, around 122 miles long, which helps a driver skirt the city.

Fly into Boston and pick the bike up when it arrives.

In Boston, a driver would rather meet you at a lot just off I-93 or I-95 than spend an hour finding a legal place to stop. Pick a wide one, such as a big-box store or a self-storage lot, and not a side street.

The Cape needs its own plan. Everything on or off the Cape goes over the Bourne or Sagamore bridge, and summer weekend traffic over them is heavy. Book for a weekday, and expect the driver to stop short of the village roads.

West of the Pioneer Valley is a different state. Route 2, the Mohawk Trail, climbs to Whitcomb Summit above North Adams. A rider will love it, but a driver with a trailer will use the Pike instead. If you live in the Berkshires, plan to meet along I-90 or a main US route.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Massachusetts motorcycle shipping crate
The bike on a crate base. Crating is an option on this route, for roughly $150 to $400.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, and over a trip of nearly 3,000 miles they cover the bike through every kind of weather. Open carriers are still the standard choice. Look the bike over with the driver at pickup and read the condition report before you sign. Keep it, and your own photos, to check against when the bike arrives in Massachusetts.

California to Massachusetts Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Massachusetts has tight streets and a snowy calendar. Plan around both.

Boston Street Grid

A full-size trailer cannot work most Boston streets. Expect to meet at a large lot near I-93 or I-95.

Cape Cod Bridges

All traffic on and off the Cape crosses the Bourne or Sagamore bridge, and summer weekends back up. Book a weekday.

Snow

Snow can add a day to a pickup, and a Cape garage that sits all winter is worth a look for battery and fuel before the bike goes on the trailer.

Tip: Heading to Laconia?

Laconia Motorcycle Week runs for nine days each June at Weirs Beach, New Hampshire, a place riders have gathered since 1916. If the bike has to go by trailer, book two to three weeks ahead, since trailers fill early.

Tip: Moving on Orders Through Hanscom or Westover?

Hanscom Air Force Base near Bedford and Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee send people through the state on orders. Get quotes the day you have a report date, and ask each carrier about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Take off saddlebags and phone mounts, keep the fuel near a quarter tank, and disable the alarm. Date your photos and shoot every side. Give the carrier a full street address and name a large lot nearby as a backup. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Massachusetts Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Massachusetts?

Most California to Massachusetts shipments take 7 to 10 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Massachusetts from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Boston runs about $925 to $1,300 on an open carrier and about $1,300 to $1,825 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $950 to $1,325. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Most riders choose open. On a trip this long, enclosed makes sense for a high-value bike or a custom paint job. The extra cost is roughly $375 to $525.

Which Massachusetts cities do carriers deliver to?

Boston, Worcester and Springfield see the most bikes, and suburbs off I-93, I-95 and I-495 are easy. Cape Cod and the Berkshires take more planning.

Is Worcester easier than Boston for delivery?

Yes. Boston streets are tight, and drivers prefer to meet at a lot. Worcester sits where I-290 and I-190 meet, so carriers are already passing and scheduling is quick.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Massachusetts?

Give it a wash, strip off soft luggage and loose gear, and keep the tank near a quarter. Take dated photos of each side and warn the dispatcher if it does not run.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Massachusetts or ship it?

The distance is about 2,985 miles from Los Angeles to Boston, about six or seven long days on a bike. Add fuel, hotels and wear, and shipping starts to look competitive.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Rarely. A bike strapped down well arrives in Massachusetts in good shape on either kind of trailer. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400, and mostly makes sense for rare or show bikes. Ask each carrier.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Massachusetts?

Yes, at most addresses. In Boston and on the Cape, drivers often prefer a meeting point, such as a big-box lot near the interstate.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes. You can call 1-800-590-6492 whenever you like, or send the quote form and compare up to ten quotes.
