California to New York Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to New York City runs about $900 to $1,225 on an open carrier, and about $1,250 to $1,725 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $875 to $1,225 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $925 to $1,275.
Upstate is a little cheaper. Buffalo, at the western end of the Thruway, runs about $825 to $1,150 open from Los Angeles, and Albany about $900 to $1,250.
Extras depend on the machine. Add $50 to $100 for a touring bike, $150 to $300 for a trike or sidecar, and expect a winch charge if the bike is a non-runner.
Spring and fall are the busy seasons. Bikes come back from Florida in April and May and go south in October and November, so quotes rise and pickups take a few days longer. Americade brings its own rush upstate. A January or February pickup on a non-snowbird lane is often cheaper. See our money-saving tips for more.

City Streets Versus Upstate Drives
The Thruway is the main artery. It carries I-87 north from the city to Albany and then turns west as I-90 through Utica, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, and most carriers heading to the Midwest use it. I-81 comes up from Pennsylvania through Binghamton and Syracuse, I-86 crosses the Southern Tier, and I-95 is the road into the Bronx and across the George Washington Bridge.
Albany sits where I-87 and I-90 meet, so it is the best single pickup in the east end of upstate. Syracuse is the equivalent in the center, with I-81 and I-90 crossing there, and Buffalo anchors the west. Small towns in the Catskills and the Adirondacks are the hardest to reach, since narrow two-lane roads and steep grades slow a trailer.
The city is another matter. Most blocks in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan have no room for a tractor-trailer to stop, let alone unload a bike, and street rules change by the block. Many carriers will not try. They ask you to meet at a large lot, often on the edge of the city or across the Hudson in New Jersey. Have the bike's key, a photo ID and a clear idea of where you are meeting.
Long Island has the same issue with a longer drive. A lot just off the Long Island Expressway is the usual handoff. If you keep the bike in a Manhattan garage, tell the carrier when you ask for quotes.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, and on a trip of nearly 2,800 miles they cover the bike through a week of weather. Open carriers are still the standard choice for most bikes. At pickup, read the condition report in front of the driver and photograph every side with the date. Keep both to check when the bike shows up in New York.
California to New York Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
New York has a dense city and a snowy upstate. Plan for the one you are in.
City Streets and Tickets
Narrow blocks, double parking and construction mean a driver would block traffic and risk a ticket. Expect to meet at a large lot outside the city.
Lake-Effect Snow
Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse sit in the lake-effect snow belt, where heavy snow can shut roads for a day or more. A winter delivery needs slack.
Catskill and Adirondack Roads
Narrow two-lane roads and steep grades slow a trailer. Expect to meet on a main road in the nearest bigger town.
Tip: Heading to Americade?
Americade is held in Lake George Village in late May or early June. Book at least two to three weeks ahead. The nearest big pickup points are Albany and Saratoga Springs, and carriers on I-87 fill up early.
Tip: Moving to Fort Drum or West Point?
Fort Drum near Watertown, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn all see regular moves. Winter orders for Fort Drum deserve extra slack because of the snow. Ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Remove anything that is not bolted down, wash the bike, and leave a quarter tank or less. Turn off the alarm and photograph all sides with the date. Bring the key and a photo ID, and agree on a lot that is open when the driver arrives. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to New York Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to New York?
Most California to New York shipments take 7-10 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to New York from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to New York City runs about $900 to $1,225 on an open carrier and about $1,250 to $1,725 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $925 to $1,275. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open fits most bikes. Pick enclosed for new paint, a classic or a bike you cannot risk scratching. The extra cost is roughly $350 to $500.
Which New York cities do carriers deliver to?
Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany are easy upstate. New York City and Long Island usually mean meeting at a lot, and the Catskills and Adirondacks take more planning.
Will a truck come to my door in New York City?
Usually not. Most blocks in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan have no room for a tractor-trailer, so carriers ask you to meet at a large lot, often on the city edge or in New Jersey.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to New York?
Clean it, remove anything loose, and keep the tank at about a quarter. Photograph every side with the date, and flag any leak or a bike that will not start.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to New York or ship it?
It is about 2,790 miles from Los Angeles to New York City, which most riders cover in five or six long days. Fuel and lodging add up, and many owners ship the bike and fly in.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
Usually not. A bike on a good open trailer, or in an enclosed one, reaches New York fine. Crating costs roughly $150 to $400 and makes sense for show bikes. Ask carriers if they offer it.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to New York?
Usually upstate, yes. In New York City, most blocks cannot take a tractor-trailer, so carriers ask you to meet at a large lot.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes, 24 hours a day. 1-800-590-6492 reaches a person, and the form works at any hour too.
