California to Alabama Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Birmingham or Mobile runs about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier. Enclosed is about $1,025 to $1,400. Start in the Bay Area and the same bike lands closer to $775 to $1,100 open, because the truck is driving another 300 miles.
Distance is only part of the price. A two-thousand-mile haul costs less per mile than a 300-mile one, since the driver is not stopping to reload every few hours, and I-10 is one of the busiest freight corridors in the country. A trailer leaving Southern California for the Gulf Coast is rarely half empty for long. That works in your favor.
The bike matters. A Sportster or a Ninja is the baseline. A dresser like a Street Glide or a Gold Wing adds weight and trailer space, and carriers often add somewhere around $50 to $100 for it. Trikes and sidecar rigs run about $150 to $300 extra. If the bike doesn't run, say so on the first call, because the driver needs a winch. And if it sits low or has a long fork, mention that too.
Timing is the other lever. This is not a snowbird lane, so winter doesn't push prices up the way it does into Florida or Arizona. The exception is October, when the Barber Vintage Festival in Leeds pulls bikes toward Birmingham. What the Drive from California to Alabama Looks Like
Leave Los Angeles on I-10 and you are on the same highway for most of the next 1,500 miles. It climbs out of the Inland Empire, drops into the desert, crosses Phoenix and Tucson, then runs through southern New Mexico to El Paso. Texas takes another 880 miles or so, and nearly all of it is open country.
The route splits depending on where in Alabama the bike is going. For Birmingham, trucks leave I-10 in West Texas and pick up I-20, which runs through Dallas, Shreveport, Jackson and Meridian before reaching Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. For Mobile, the driver stays on I-10 through Houston, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and the whole Alabama stretch is only about 66 miles. Huntsville and Montgomery are drop-offs past Birmingham on I-65, Huntsville to the north and Montgomery to the south.
Out of the Bay Area the truck has roughly 300 more miles to cover, which is where the higher range in the tables comes from. Pickups elsewhere in California land near these numbers, and the quote form gives you the real one for your address.
A word on terminals versus door-to-door. Most carriers will pick up at or near your address. If you live somewhere a 70-foot rig can't turn around, you will probably meet the driver at a shopping center or a truck stop. Plan an hour and bring the keys.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls. On a 2,000-mile trip through desert sun and Gulf Coast storms, that is the main reason owners of custom paint and vintage bikes pay more for them. Before pickup, walk around the bike with the driver and check the condition report together. That report and your own dated photos are your record of how the bike left California and what it should look like when it shows up in Alabama.
California to Alabama Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Three things can slow this trip. Three more can save you money or trouble. Plan around both before you book.
Gulf Coast Hurricane Season
Hurricane season runs June through November. A storm near Mobile, New Orleans or Houston can close sections of I-10 and push pickups and deliveries back by days. Mobile deliveries are the most exposed. Birmingham is inland and usually less affected.
West Texas and Long Gaps
I-10 across Texas runs about 880 miles, much of it empty. If the truck breaks down or a storm closes the road, there are few detours and not many places to swap trailers. That can cost a day.
Tunnels, Bridges and Gulf Traffic
I-10 passes through the George Wallace Tunnel under the Mobile River and crosses the north end of Mobile Bay. Farther west it runs over the 18-mile Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in Louisiana. A wreck on any of them can back traffic up for hours, and there is rarely a quick way around.
Tip: Book Early for Barber
The Barber Vintage Festival is held every October at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, a short ride from Birmingham. If your bike is headed there, book two to three weeks out. A pickup already on the schedule is easier for a driver to fit in than one requested a week before.
Tip: Check Alabama DMV Rules Before You Register
If you are moving to Alabama and plan to register the bike there, check the rules with the Alabama Department of Revenue before the bike arrives so you know what paperwork to have in hand.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Wash the bike, take off soft saddlebags, GPS units and phone mounts, and keep the tank at about a quarter full or less. Turn off the alarm, take dated photos from every side, and note any leaks. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist. If the bike doesn't run, or has been lowered or modified, tell the dispatcher before pickup.
California to Alabama Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Alabama?
Once the bike is on the truck, most California to Alabama shipments take 6 to 9 days. Mobile, right on I-10, tends to be the easier delivery. Birmingham, Montgomery and Huntsville add a leg off the main highway. Pickup is separate: carriers often need a few days to fill a trailer, so plan on up to two weeks from booking to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Alabama from California?
For a standard cruiser or sport bike, expect about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier from Los Angeles, and about $775 to $1,100 from the Bay Area, where the haul is roughly 300 miles longer. Enclosed transport runs about $1,025 to $1,400 from Los Angeles. These are estimates. Your real price depends on the bike, the dates and the two cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for a California to Alabama motorcycle shipment?
Open is the normal choice, and it is fine for most bikes. This trip crosses desert heat, Texas wind and Gulf Coast rain over 2,000 miles, so enclosed makes sense for fresh paint, a vintage bike or anything you would hate to see with a rock chip. For a stock bike with a few miles on it, I would put the extra $300 to $400 somewhere else.
Which Alabama cities do carriers deliver to?
Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville and Montgomery see the most bikes. Carriers also deliver door to door in smaller places like Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Dothan, but a truck that has to leave the main highway may cost a little more or ask you to meet at a parking lot near an interstate.
Can I ship my motorcycle to the Barber Vintage Festival in Leeds?
Yes. The festival is held in October at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, a short drive from Birmingham, so Birmingham is the usual delivery city. Book two to three weeks ahead. Carriers fill up early for events, and a pickup that is already on someone's schedule is easier to fit in than one requested a week out.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Alabama?
Wash it, take off soft saddlebags, GPS units and phone mounts, and leave the tank at about a quarter full or less. Photograph every side with the date on the photos, write down any leaks or scratches, and tell the dispatcher if the bike does not run. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Alabama or ship it?
The ride is about 2,000 miles, which most people cover in four to five long days. Between the heat in Arizona and West Texas, fuel, hotels and tire wear, the cost gets close to a shipping quote, and you add 2,000 miles to the odometer. If you want the road trip, ride. If you only need the bike in Alabama, fly and let a carrier haul it.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
Usually not. A bike strapped properly on an open trailer or loaded in an enclosed trailer makes this trip without a crate. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400 and mostly makes sense for show bikes and rare machines. Ask carriers whether they offer it when you request quotes.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Alabama?
Yes, in most cases. A driver will pick up and drop off at or near your address. If your street is narrow or your community is gated, expect the driver to ask you to meet at a big parking lot nearby.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes. The line is answered 24 hours a day at 1-800-590-6492. You can also fill out the quote form at the top of this page and compare up to ten quotes from carriers.
