California to Louisiana Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to New Orleans runs about $700 to $950 on an open carrier, and about $975 to $1,325 enclosed. A San Diego pickup is a little closer at about $675 to $925, and a San Francisco pickup runs higher at about $775 to $1,050.
Baton Rouge costs about the same as New Orleans from Los Angeles, near $675 to $925 open. Shreveport, up on I-20, is the shortest of the group at about $625 to $875.
Dressers and Gold Wings often add $50 to $100, trikes and sidecars add $150 to $300, and non-runners need a winch. Tell carriers before pickup. Tell the dispatcher so the truck has one.
Hurricane season shapes the calendar. A storm heading for the coast can fill evacuation routes and delay trailers for days, so book coastal pickups with room to spare. Outside peak weeks, prices are often lower in fall and winter. See our money-saving tips for more.

Bridges, Bayous and the Atchafalaya
Look at a map before you pick a drop-off. Louisiana is cut by water, and a delivery that looks close on paper can mean a long drive around a river or bayou. New Orleans sits south of Lake Pontchartrain, and the Twin Span carries I-10 across the lake's eastern end between the city and Slidell. Hurricane Katrina broke the old spans in 2005, and new ones opened in 2009 and 2010.
The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is the one every driver knows. It runs about 18 miles over swamp between Lafayette and Baton Rouge. Trucks have a lower speed limit than cars on it, and the two river crossings are narrow with no shoulders, so a crash can close it. When I-10 shuts, US-190 is the alternate. Ask for a delivery window, not an exact hour.
Baton Rouge and Lafayette are the simpler drops. Both sit on I-10, with I-12 starting in Baton Rouge toward Hammond and Slidell and I-49 starting near Lafayette and heading north. In the north, I-20 crosses from the Texas line at Waskom through Shreveport and Bossier City.
Rural addresses take more planning. Some sit down narrow levee or parish roads where a tractor-trailer cannot turn around. Offer a gas station or a big parking lot and the driver will take it from there.

3. Compare the offers
Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can look up any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.
4. Choose your company
You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Summers are long, hot and humid, and a bike on an open trailer sits in it for days. Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps with the sun, the rain and the salt air near the coast. Walk around the bike with the driver at pickup and read the condition report closely. Your dated photos and that report are what you check when the bike arrives in Louisiana.
California to Louisiana Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Louisiana has water, weather and a calendar of events to plan around.
Hurricane Season
The season runs June 1 through November 30, with the statistical peak around September 10. A storm can delay trailers for days.
Bridges and Closures
A crash on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge can stop I-10 for hours. A carrier will give you a window, not a time.
Levee and Parish Roads
Some rural roads are too narrow for a tractor-trailer. Be ready to meet at a lot on a larger road.
Tip: Heading to the Cajun Country H.O.G. Rally?
Cajun Harley-Davidson in Scott, near Lafayette, hosts a regional rally that ran April 16 to 18 in 2026. Have the bike delivered to Lafayette a few days ahead and ask for quotes early.
Tip: Reporting to Barksdale?
Barksdale Air Force Base sits along the south side of I-20 next to Bossier City and Shreveport and is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing. Get quotes once the report date is in hand and ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Wash it, take off loose gear, leave about a quarter tank and turn off the alarm. Photograph every side and date the photos. Say which parish or city the address is in, and whether the last mile is a levee or parish road. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to Louisiana Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Louisiana?
Most California to Louisiana shipments take 4 to 8 days once the bike is on the truck, and a day or so more from the Bay Area. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more if a storm is in the Gulf.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Louisiana from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to New Orleans runs about $700 to $950 on an open carrier and about $975 to $1,325 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $775 to $1,050. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open is the normal pick. In the long hot summer or for a high-value bike, enclosed is worth the extra. The extra cost is roughly $275 to $375.
Which Louisiana cities do carriers deliver to?
New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport see the most bikes. A rural address on a levee or parish road may mean meeting the driver at a lot.
Can a hurricane delay my shipment?
Yes. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and a storm heading for the coast can fill the evacuation routes and delay trailers for days. Book coastal pickups with extra room.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Louisiana?
Clean it, strip off loose accessories, and keep the tank at about a quarter. Dated photos of every side help, and the dispatcher needs to know about leaks or a bike that will not start.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Louisiana or ship it?
Riding is about 1,895 miles from Los Angeles to New Orleans, about three or four long days. Fuel, hotels and tire wear add up, so shipping is often close in price. Ride if the trip is the point.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
Usually not. A bike strapped properly on an open trailer, or loaded in an enclosed one, travels to Louisiana without a crate. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400 and suits show bikes. Ask carriers about it.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Louisiana?
Yes, in most cases. Levee roads and tight streets can keep a trailer out, so the driver may suggest a large lot close by.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes. 1-800-590-6492 is staffed day and night, and the quote form at the top of this page works at any hour.
