California Idaho

Boise is about 840 miles from Los Angeles, and I-84 takes most of the traffic the last stretch. California to Idaho motorcycle shipping usually takes 2 to 5 days on the road to the Boise area and a day or two longer to the panhandle. We send your request to carriers in our network and you can get up to ten free quotes. If you need to ship a motorcycle to Idaho from California, name your town when you ask. California to Idaho Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

From Los Angeles to Boise, expect about $450 to $625 for a standard cruiser or sport bike on an open carrier, and about $625 to $875 enclosed. A San Francisco pickup is closer, with the open range at about $425 to $575, and San Diego runs higher at about $475 to $675.

The ride north is long, and a truck keeps the miles off your odometer.

Idaho Falls on the east side costs about as much as the long haul to Boise, around $475 to $650 from Los Angeles. Coeur d'Alene costs more, around $550 to $750, because the truck goes a lot farther north. Do not assume a Boise price applies there.

Heavier and unusual bikes add to the base. Tourers and Gold Wings often add $50 to $100, trikes and sidecars add $150 to $300, and a non-runner needs a winch. Mention it when you ask for quotes. Mention all of it up front so the price does not change at pickup.

Spring is the busy season, when riders who stored a bike over the winter want it home by May. Rally weeks pull some bikes east in August. Quotes in fall and winter outside snowbird lanes are often lower, though snow can slow a pickup. See our money-saving tips for more.

Where a Bike Goes Once It Reaches Idaho

Whichever way the truck arrives, most of the traffic ends up on I-84, which covers about 276 miles across the south of the state. Nampa, Boise, Twin Falls and Burley all sit on it, so a truck bound for any of them has an easy run. Boise has the most pickup and drop options of any city in the state.

Fly into Boise and pick the bike up when it arrives.

The east side works differently. I-15 comes up from Utah through Pocatello and Idaho Falls, and I-86 links Pocatello back to I-84 near Declo. A bike headed to Pocatello does not stay on I-84, and that is why the price from Los Angeles to Idaho Falls looks different from the price to Boise.

Coeur d'Alene is the awkward one. It sits on I-90 in the panhandle, which runs only about 74 miles inside Idaho before it climbs Lookout Pass into Montana. No interstate ties it to Boise. US-95 does, running north from Weiser through Lewiston, and it is slower than an interstate.

Inside Boise, I-184 is a spur about 4 miles long that feeds downtown. If your address is in the middle of town, expect the driver to ask for a meeting point near the interchange.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Idaho motorcycle shipping crate
The bike on a crate base. Crating is an option on this lane, at roughly $150 to $400.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps on a route that crosses mountain passes in winter. Open carriers work for most bikes. At pickup, go through the condition report with the driver and look the bike over together. Keep your own dated photos with that report, and compare both when the bike reaches Idaho.

California to Idaho Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Idaho has a few quirks that can change a schedule. Plan for them before you book.

Mountain Passes in Winter

Snow on Lookout Pass and the passes toward Montana can hold a truck for a day. A winter pickup in the panhandle deserves a few extra days.

Two Halves of the State

No interstate links Boise with Coeur d'Alene. A bike going to the panhandle takes a different route than one going to Boise.

Small-Town Addresses

McCall, Salmon and Sandpoint are far from the main roads. Expect the driver to ask you to meet at a lot on a highway.

Tip: Book Early in Spring

Quotes climb when riders bring bikes out of storage in April and May. Booking three or four weeks ahead gives you a better pick of carriers.

Tip: Heading to Mountain Home?

Mountain Home Air Force Base lies about 12 miles southwest of the town of Mountain Home, roughly 40 miles southeast of Boise on I-84. Ask each carrier whether it can deliver to the base or wants to meet you in town, and ask about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Clean the bike, remove soft bags and anything loose, and leave the tank at a quarter or less. Turn off the alarm and photograph every side with the date. Give the carrier your exact town and say whether the address is off a paved road. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Idaho Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Idaho?

Most California to Idaho shipments take 2 to 5 days once the bike is on the truck, and a day or two more to Coeur d'Alene. Pickup scheduling adds a few days, and winter adds more.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Idaho from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Boise runs about $450 to $625 on an open carrier and about $625 to $875 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $425 to $575. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Open is the standard choice for most bikes. Enclosed is worth it in winter or for a bike with fresh paint or a high value. The extra cost is roughly $175 to $250.

Which Idaho cities do carriers deliver to?

Boise, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and Coeur d'Alene see the most bikes. Smaller towns are served too, though a back road may mean meeting the driver on a larger one.

Does a bike going to Coeur d'Alene cost the same as one going to Boise?

No. Coeur d'Alene is in the panhandle, farther north, and the truck takes a different route. Ask for it by name and expect a higher quote.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Idaho?

Give it a wash, take off soft bags and loose gear, and leave about a quarter tank. Take dated photos of every side, and let the dispatcher know about any leak or a bike that will not run.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Idaho or ship it?

That is about 840 miles from Los Angeles to Boise, which most riders cover in two long days. Fuel, hotels and tire wear add up fast. Ride if you want the trip, and ship if you only need the bike in Idaho.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Rarely. A properly strapped bike rides an open or enclosed trailer to Idaho without a crate. Crating runs roughly $150 to $400 and fits show bikes and rare machines. Ask carriers if they offer it.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Idaho?

Yes, for most addresses. Mountain roads and small-town streets are the exceptions, and the driver may ask you to meet at a larger lot.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes, day or night. Call 1-800-590-6492 or use the quote form at the top of this page to compare up to ten quotes.
