California to Washington Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Seattle runs about $525 to $725 on an open carrier, and about $725 to $1,025 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $550 to $775 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $450 to $625.

The run up I-5 is long and straight, and a bike spends it on a trailer.

Tacoma is on I-5 and sits a little closer at about $525 to $725 open from Los Angeles. Spokane is at the far end of I-90 across the Cascades and runs about $525 to $750. The west side deliveries are the easy ones, and a trailer can usually reach a residential street in the suburbs.

Several things nudge the price up. A tourer adds roughly $50 to $100, a trike or sidecar roughly $150 to $300, and a bike that will not run needs a winch.

Summer is the busy stretch, since riding season and the Oyster Run in September fill trailers. Fall brings Washington bikes heading south for the winter. Washington is not a snowbird destination, so quotes outside the snowbird lanes are often cheaper from October to February. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-5, I-90 and the Cascade Passes

West side deliveries are the easy ones. Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and Olympia all sit right on I-5, and a trailer can usually reach a residential street in the suburbs. Inside Seattle itself, steep hills and tight streets can be a problem for a long trailer, and the driver may ask you to meet at a wide commercial lot, which is normal.

Fly into Seattle and pick the bike up when it arrives.

I-90 is the only Interstate that crosses the state from west to east, about 297 miles from Seattle to the Idaho line near Spokane, running through Issaquah, Ellensburg, Moses Lake and Ritzville. It crosses Snoqualmie Pass at about 3,000 feet, where trucks can be required to chain up in winter. US 2 is the other way over, 326 miles from Everett to the Idaho line near Newport, crossing the Cascades at Stevens Pass, 4,061 feet, which is higher than Snoqualmie and slower.

Islands are a separate question. Washington State Ferries serves Bainbridge, Whidbey and the San Juans, and busy sailings back up onto the highway shoulder. A carrier hauling a full trailer may prefer to stop on the mainland and have you pick up near the dock, so ask before you book.

State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, is a rider's road that closes for the winter, typically from late November until the snow is cleared in late April or early May. No carrier is going to try it.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Washington motorcycle shipping crate
Strapped onto a crate base. The upgrade costs roughly $150 to $400 on this route.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Rain is the west side's constant, and it hardly bothers a carrier, but an enclosed trailer keeps it off fresh paint or a high-value bike. Open carriers are still the standard choice for most bikes. Compare the bike with the condition report at pickup, and add dated photos of your own. Keep both to check against when the bike reaches Washington.

California to Washington Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Washington has rain on the west side and snow on the passes. Plan around the mountains.

Snow on the Passes

Snoqualmie has closed in extreme weather, and Stevens gets extremely heavy snow. Trucks wait for chains, and a delivery to Spokane or Wenatchee waits with them.

Ferry Lines

Island deliveries mean a ferry queue. Busy sailings back up along the highway shoulder, and a long trailer may not be practical on the boat.

Seattle Streets

Hills and narrow blocks keep a full trailer from reaching some addresses. Plan on meeting the driver in a larger lot nearby.

Tip: Heading to the Oyster Run?

The Oyster Run is held in Anacortes each September, has run since 1981, and is often called the largest motorcycle rally in the Pacific Northwest. Book three or four weeks ahead and expect carriers to price accordingly. Anacortes is also where the ferries to the San Juan Islands leave, so ask the carrier where it will meet you.

Tip: Moving to Lewis-McChord, Everett or Whidbey?

Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Naval Station Everett, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and Fairchild Air Force Base outside Spokane keep a steady flow of service members moving. Get quotes as soon as you have a report date, and ask each carrier about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Take off whatever is not bolted down, wash the bike, and leave a quarter tank or less. Disable the alarm and photograph every side with the date. Say if you are east or west of the Cascades. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Washington Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Washington?

Most California to Washington shipments take 3-6 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Washington from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Seattle runs about $525 to $725 on an open carrier and about $725 to $1,025 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $450 to $625. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Which Washington cities do carriers deliver to?

Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and Olympia sit right on I-5 and are the easiest. Spokane and the east side add a mountain pass, and islands add a ferry.

Can a carrier deliver to an island?

Usually not directly. A carrier hauling a full trailer may prefer to stop on the mainland and have you pick up near the ferry dock, so ask before you book.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Washington?

Rinse the bike, strip off anything that could shake loose, and aim for a quarter tank. Date your photos of each side, and flag any leak or a bike that will not start.

Rarely. Bikes get to Washington strapped on open trailers or loaded in enclosed ones. A crate costs roughly $150 to $400, so keep it for show bikes. Ask when you get quotes.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Washington?

Usually, yes on the west side. In Seattle hills and on ferry islands, the driver may suggest a wide lot or a mainland meeting point.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?
