California to Tennessee Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Nashville runs about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier, and about $1,025 to $1,400 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $725 to $1,000 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $775 to $1,100.

Most of the trip is a long run of interstate before Tennessee.

Memphis is the closest big Tennessee city to California and runs about $675 to $925 open from Los Angeles. Knoxville sits another long stretch of I-40 east of Nashville, so ask carriers for a quote on that city directly.

The bike itself sets part of the price. A touring bike or Gold Wing tends to add $50 to $100, a trike or sidecar adds $150 to $300, and a bike that will not run needs a winch.

Spring and fall are the best months for riding, and demand for moving bikes follows. October is the busiest month in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so book two weeks ahead if your delivery is in or near the Smokies. Winter is often cheaper outside snowbird lanes, but ice is a real risk on the plateau. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-40, the Plateau and the Smokies

I-40 is 455 miles long in Tennessee, the longest piece of that highway in any state. It passes Memphis, Jackson, Nashville, Cookeville, Crossville, Knoxville and Newport on the way east to North Carolina. Between Cookeville and Crossville it crosses the Cumberland Plateau, climbing to nearly 2,000 feet, and snow and ice there can slow trucks. Nashville is where I-24, I-40 and I-65 all meet.

Fly into Nashville and pick the bike up when it arrives.

Memphis looks west toward Arkansas, which sits right across the Mississippi, and Memphis to Nashville is around 210 miles. Knoxville and Chattanooga connect to Georgia on I-75, North Carolina on I-40 and Virginia on I-81.

Mountain addresses are the difficult ones. Gatlinburg sits in a valley ringed by high ridges, about 39 miles southeast of Knoxville, and Pigeon Forge is about 6 miles north of it. Roads up to cabins in the Smokies foothills climb quickly and turn hard, and a full-size trailer may not make every drive. Offer a parking lot in town, or a rental-office lot if you are staying in a cabin.

The Natchez Trace Parkway ends at Pasquo, about 20 miles southwest of Nashville, and commercial traffic is prohibited along the entire route, so no carrier will use it. Anyone living near it should plan on a handoff at a main road.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to Tennessee motorcycle shipping crate
The bike is strapped to a crate base here. A crate is optional on this route and costs roughly $150 to $400.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps over a long haul and for fresh paint or a high-value bike. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. At pickup, go over the bike with the driver and read the condition report together. Keep it with your dated photos for the day the bike arrives in Tennessee.

California to Tennessee Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

Tennessee has three separate markets and a mountain range. Plan around where your address sits.

Winter on the Plateau

Snow and ice on I-40 across the Cumberland Plateau and in the mountains can slow a driver. Allow extra time from December to March.

Mountain Drives

Steep, tight driveways near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge can be hard on a big trailer. Plan a handoff in town.

Three Separate Markets

Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville are each roughly 180 to 210 miles from the next. A carrier that serves one may not serve the others.

Tip: Shipping for the Tail of the Dragon?

The Tail of the Dragon is about 11 miles of US 129 along the North Carolina line near Deals Gap, said to have about 318 curves. Neither it nor the Cherohala Skyway is a place to park a tractor-trailer, so ask the carrier where it can meet you. A town on a main highway such as Maryville is the likelier drop point, and from there you ride in. If you ship in for a week and ship home from the same place, quote both directions together.

Tip: Moving to Fort Campbell or Millington?

Fort Campbell straddles the Tennessee and Kentucky line near Clarksville, and Naval Support Activity Mid-South is in Millington, about 16 miles northeast of Memphis. Get quotes as soon as you have a report date, and ask each carrier about a military discount.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Begin by washing the bike and removing soft bags and mounts. Run the tank down to about a quarter, turn the alarm off, and take dated photos of each side. Say which Tennessee you mean, whether Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville or the mountains. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to Tennessee Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Tennessee?

Most California to Tennessee shipments take 6-9 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Tennessee from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Nashville runs about $725 to $1,000 on an open carrier and about $1,025 to $1,400 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $775 to $1,100. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Open covers most bikes. Enclosed makes sense for a valuable bike, fresh paint or a winter move over the plateau. The extra cost is roughly $300 to $400.

Which Tennessee cities do carriers deliver to?

Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga are the easiest. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge usually mean meeting at a lot in town.

Can a carrier use the Natchez Trace Parkway?

No. Commercial traffic is prohibited along the whole Parkway, so anyone living near it should plan on a handoff at a main road.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Tennessee?

Wash it, take off soft bags and anything loose, and leave about a quarter tank. Photograph each side with the date, note leaks, and tell the dispatcher if the bike will not start.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Tennessee or ship it?

It would take about 2,015 miles from Los Angeles to Nashville, usually four long days. Fuel, hotels and tire wear add up, so many owners ship the bike and fly.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Not usually. A bike that is strapped properly on an open trailer, or loaded in an enclosed one, gets to Tennessee without a crate. A crate adds roughly $150 to $400 and fits show bikes and rare machines. Ask carriers if they offer it.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Tennessee?

Usually. A driver comes to your address when the road allows it. Up a cabin road in the Smokies, expect to meet at a lot in town.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes, around the clock. The number is 1-800-590-6492, and the quote form brings back up to ten quotes.
