South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping

South Dakota shipping runs on two calendars, the ordinary one and the one built around the Sturgis rally in August. We provide up to ten free quotes from our network of licensed, insured carriers, which saves you time and money. I-90 crosses the state for about 413 miles, from Wyoming past Rapid City, Chamberlain and Sioux Falls to the Minnesota line, and I-29 adds about 252 miles up the eastern edge. If you need to ship a motorcycle to or from South Dakota, the dates matter more than the miles. A bike headed for the Black Hills in rally week is competing with other riders for the same trailer space. South Dakota motorcycle shipping is really two businesses, rally season and everything else. Rates below are estimates for a standard bike on an open trailer. Use the quote form at the top of this page or call 1-800-590-6492 at any hour.

Ship a Motorcycle to South Dakota for the Rally or for Good

Tell the carrier early if the bike is headed to the Black Hills, because the calendar changes everything there. The Sturgis rally starts on the first Friday in August and runs ten days, and Rapid City, Spearfish and the towns around Sturgis get far more bike traffic than usual. Book as soon as you know your dates.

Sioux Falls is the easy delivery. It is the state's largest city, with more than 190,000 people, and it sits where I-90 and I-29 cross, so a carrier coming from Chicago can reach it on I-90 without leaving the interstate. Rapid City, the second-largest city, is farther out, about 345 miles west on the same interstate, so a pickup there can take longer to line up.

Pierre, the capital, is the odd one. It is not on an interstate. The closest point is Vivian, exit 212 on I-90, about 35 miles south, and a driver runs north from there on US 83. That adds time and sometimes cost. Ask for it by name when you request quotes.

If you are moving a bike in from the Midwest, the Illinois to South Dakota and Minnesota to South Dakota lanes are the shortest. From the West Coast, the California to South Dakota route comes in toward the Black Hills from the west.

South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping Rates and Transit Times

Last updated: October 2026

Short regional hauls are the cheapest part of the South Dakota market. A standard bike on an open carrier runs about $350 to $475 for a 350-mile trip, about $375 to $525 for 500 miles, and about $500 to $675 for 1,000 miles. At 2,000 miles the open-trailer figure is about $725 to $1,000. Longer hauls cost less per mile.

Going enclosed adds roughly 30% to 50%. Add about $150 to $400 for a crate and about $150 to $300 for a trike or sidecar. A heavy tourer like a Road Glide often runs $50 to $100 more, and rally weeks push the price up. The lanes in the table are ones carriers see often here. Figures assume a standard bike on an open trailer, and transit time is days on the road after pickup, so add one to three days before that.

How Getting Quotes Works

You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run South Dakota lanes, and the offers come back to you.

4. Choose your company

You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.

Shipping a Motorcycle From South Dakota After the Ride

Plenty of riders bring their bikes to the Black Hills by trailer or carrier, ride for a week, and then need to get the bike home. If you can, give carriers a pickup window of several days after the rally instead of a single date.

Outside rally season, the main lanes out of South Dakota run along I-90 and I-29. A bike leaving Sioux Falls for Chicago is quoted at roughly $400 to $550 on an open trailer, with 2 to 5 days on the road. Rapid City to Denver is one to three days. To the Texas and Florida coasts it is a long haul, so give carriers a window, not a single day.

Some riders ship the bike both ways and fly in for the week, which saves two long days of interstate each direction. If you try that, ask each carrier whether the quote is door to door or to a terminal.

South Dakota Motorcycle Transport Along I-90, I-29 and the Hills

I-90 does most of the work. It passes Spearfish, Sturgis, Rapid City, Murdo, Chamberlain, Mitchell and Sioux Falls, and it crosses the Missouri River between Oacoma and Chamberlain on the Lewis and Clark Memorial Bridge. The speed limit is 80 mph from Rapid City to the Minnesota line, except for a 65 mph stretch in Sioux Falls, and 75 mph between Rapid City and Wyoming.

The Black Hills are another matter. I-90 runs along the north and east edges of the hills, with Sturgis right off it at exits 30 through 32. US 385 runs through the hills from Hot Springs by way of Custer and Hill City to Deadwood, where it meets US 85. Carriers mostly stay on I-90 and meet you in town.

I-29 runs up the east side from North Sioux City past Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown to the North Dakota line. That corridor feeds the South Dakota to North Dakota lane, and to the south I-29 runs through Sioux City and Council Bluffs to Kansas City.

Motorcycle Shipping to South Dakota by Season

August carries the year. Rally week and the weeks around it can push rates up on busy lanes, and trailer space is tight. Outside the rally, shipping into the Black Hills is a more ordinary job.

Winter is a different problem. Storms have closed I-90 and I-29 for stretches, and South Dakota's own highway department posts those closures. A trailer waits when the road is shut, so a January pickup can slide by days.

If your date is flexible, ask each carrier which weeks are easiest on its schedule for your lane.

Sturgis and the Black Hills Rally Season

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is held every August, and it is why South Dakota is on a shipping page at all. It began in 1938 as the Black Hills Motor Classic, started by Clarence "Pappy" Hoel and the Jackpine Gypsies club, which still owns the track and hillclimb at the center of it. Campgrounds like the Buffalo Chip host concerts of their own.

For shipping, the lessons are simple. Pick the delivery town before you book. Sturgis has about 7,000 residents the rest of the year, so ask each carrier where it can park a trailer in rally week, and expect many to suggest Rapid City, Spearfish or another town with room. Give yourself a buffer of a few days on both ends and ask for quotes well ahead.

If your bike is coming from Texas, Texas to South Dakota is a long haul north across the Plains. Riders in California use the California to South Dakota lane. Ask each carrier whether it offers a multi-bike discount if you and a friend are shipping together.

Moving a Bike to Ellsworth Air Force Base

Ellsworth Air Force Base sits just north of Box Elder, about 10 miles northeast of Rapid City, and brings a steady flow of service members in and out of western South Dakota. If you are on orders, get quotes the moment you have a report date, and mention that you are heading to the Rapid City area so the carrier plans the I-90 run. Ask each carrier whether it offers a military discount.

South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping Challenges and Tips

Rally season causes most of the trouble. The rest is distance and weather.

Rally Week Capacity

Trailers can fill early for Sturgis. Late bookings pay more or wait, so ask for quotes as soon as you have dates, and plan the trip home the same way.

Small Towns, Big Trucks

Sturgis is a town of about 7,000 and gets crowded in August. A tractor-trailer needs a lot with room to turn, so carriers may ask to meet in a larger nearby town.

Winter on I-90

Snow has shut I-90 and I-29 for stretches, and a January pickup can slide by days.

Tip: Book Rally Shipping a Month Out

For Sturgis, request quotes four to six weeks ahead and give a pickup window. Early requests give carriers more room to fit your bike in.

Tip: Pick the Meeting Town First

Choose Rapid City, Spearfish or another town with parking before you book, then tell the carrier. It saves a back and forth later.

Tip: Photograph and Strip the Bike

Take off the saddlebags and anything that can fly off, then photograph every side. The prep checklist covers the rest.

South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping FAQs

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to South Dakota?

For a standard bike on an open carrier, about $375 to $525 for 500 miles, $500 to $675 for 1,000 miles and $725 to $1,000 for 2,000 miles. Enclosed adds roughly 40%, and rally weeks cost more on top of that.

How far ahead should I book for the Sturgis rally?

Four to six weeks is a sensible lead time. Carriers fill trailers for the rally early, and a pickup window helps. Prices tend to rise as the date gets closer, and riders heading home after the rally need trailers too.

Will a carrier deliver right to Sturgis?

Sometimes, but Sturgis is small and crowded in rally week. Many drivers prefer to meet in Rapid City, Spearfish or another town with room for a trailer. Ask each carrier what it will do.

How long does shipping from California to South Dakota take?

A Los Angeles to Sturgis run is about 1,300 miles and usually takes 3 to 6 days on the road. Add one to three days for pickup scheduling.

Can I ship a motorcycle to Pierre?

Yes. Pierre is not on an interstate, so the driver leaves I-90 at Vivian and runs about 35 miles north on US 83. Name the city when you request quotes, because the extra miles can affect price and timing.

Does winter weather stop shipments in South Dakota?

Yes, sometimes. Storms have closed stretches of I-90 and I-29, and the trailer waits until the road reopens. If your date is flexible, steer clear of the middle of winter.

Should I use open or enclosed transport for a rally bike?

Open is fine for most bikes. If you have fresh paint or a custom build, enclosed protects it from road grit and weather, at roughly 40% more.

Do I need to be there at pickup and delivery?

Usually, or someone you name. Carriers generally hand the bike over only to a person who signs the condition report, and the same goes at pickup. Ask each carrier what it requires, and choose a window you can actually keep.
