California to Wyoming Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Cheyenne runs about $525 to $725 on an open carrier, and about $725 to $1,025 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $525 to $725 open, and a San Francisco pickup is priced a little higher.
Rock Springs sits on I-80 in the southwest, so ask carriers for a quote on it directly. Casper, on or near I-25, runs about $500 to $700. Jackson is the hard one, since it is far from any interstate and the roads in are US 26, 89 and 191, so say which side of the state you are on when you ask for quotes.
Bike type matters here. A touring bike or Gold Wing can add $50 to $100, a trike or sidecar can add $150 to $300, and a bike that does not start needs a winch.
Summer is when the roads fill, with Yellowstone and Grand Teton bringing traffic to Cody and Jackson, and early August bringing Sturgis riders. Prices on busy lanes run higher then, so book three weeks ahead if your dates are fixed. Fall is the sweet spot, and quotes outside snowbird lanes often run lower. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-80, I-25 and the Wind
By length, I-80 is the big one at about 403 miles, from Evanston on the Utah line to Pine Bluffs at Nebraska. It passes Green River, Rock Springs, Rawlins, Laramie and Cheyenne, and tops out at Sherman Summit in the Laramie Mountains. I-25 is about 301 miles, from the Colorado line to Buffalo, and I-90 adds about 209 miles in the northeast. I-25 joins I-80 to I-90, so a bike going from Cheyenne to Gillette or Sheridan rides it north to Buffalo and then turns onto I-90.
Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins and Rock Springs are on I-80. Casper, Douglas and Buffalo are on or near I-25, and Gillette and Sheridan are on I-90. A town on one of those roads is easy. A town off them, and Wyoming has plenty, means a longer last leg and a meeting point.
The stretch carriers worry about is the 77 miles between Rawlins and Laramie on I-80, which sees winter closures. Wind is the other trouble. In high wind WYDOT has closed I-80 to light, high-profile vehicles, as it did between Otto Road near Cheyenne and Elk Mountain in October 2020, and light trucks can end up waiting at an exit until the wind drops.
The Beartooth Highway has a Wyoming stretch too, but it is a rider's road and not a freight route. For pickups in Cody or along US 14, 16 and 20, expect to meet the driver in Cody itself or in Sheridan.
How Quotes Work When You Ship a Motorcycle to Wyoming
You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run this route, and the offers come back to you.
1. Send one request
Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.
2. Carriers respond
We pass your request to carriers that run the California to Wyoming route. You can receive up to ten free quotes without calling them one at a time.
3. Compare the offers
Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can look up any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.
4. Choose your company
You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.
How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Wind does not care about the season, and an enclosed trailer keeps dust and weather off fresh paint or a high-value bike. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. At pickup, read the condition report in front of the driver and shoot dated photos of all sides. Keep both for when the bike gets to Wyoming.
California to Wyoming Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
Wyoming has wind, long winters and very few roads. Plan around all three.
Wind on I-80
In high wind WYDOT has closed I-80 to light, high-profile vehicles between Otto Road and Elk Mountain. Trucks with light loads may wait it out.
Rawlins to Laramie in Winter
The roughly 77-mile stretch of I-80 between Rawlins and Laramie sees winter closures. A winter delivery can slip by a day or more.
Far From Anywhere
Jackson, Cody and the small towns sit far from the interstates. Expect the driver to propose a meeting place in a bigger town.
Tip: Sending a Bike to Sturgis?
Each year in early August, riders pour into Wyoming on their way to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. If you want to send a bike to the rally, quote three weeks early and compare prices for open and enclosed. Tell the carrier whether the bike should go to Sturgis itself or to a town nearby such as Rapid City, and what day you will land.
Tip: Moving to F.E. Warren?
F.E. Warren Air Force Base is in Cheyenne, which makes the interstate junction a convenient pickup for anyone moving on orders. Give a window of a few days, because wind and snow on I-80 can push a schedule by a day, and ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Wash the bike, pull off soft gear, and run the tank down to a quarter. Silence the alarm and take dated photos from each side. Leave wind slack in the schedule, and say which side of the state you are on. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.
California to Wyoming Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to Wyoming?
Most California to Wyoming shipments take 3-6 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to Wyoming from California?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Cheyenne runs about $525 to $725 on an open carrier and about $725 to $1,025 enclosed. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open is the normal choice. Enclosed helps against wind-blown grit and winter weather, and suits a valuable bike. The extra cost is roughly $200 to $300.
Which Wyoming cities do carriers deliver to?
Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins and Rock Springs are on I-80, Casper and Buffalo are on or near I-25, and Gillette and Sheridan are on I-90. Jackson and Cody are far from the interstates and usually mean meeting in a bigger town.
Does wind delay shipments in Wyoming?
Sometimes. In high wind WYDOT has closed I-80 to light, high-profile vehicles, so a light truck can wait at an exit until the wind drops. Leave a loose pickup window.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to Wyoming?
Wash the bike, remove soft luggage and mounts, and run the tank down to a quarter. Date your photos of every side, write down any leaks, and say if the bike will not start.
Should I ride my motorcycle from California to Wyoming or ship it?
It is about 1,100 miles from Los Angeles to Cheyenne, usually two long days for a rider. Fuel and hotels add up quickly, so shipping is worth a quote.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
Generally not. Bikes reach Wyoming on open or enclosed trailers without crates. If you want one, expect roughly $150 to $400 extra, and ask which carriers offer it.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to Wyoming?
Generally yes on I-80, I-25 and I-90. Off the interstates, the driver may propose a meeting point in a bigger town.
