When to Book Sturgis Motorcycle Shipping
Trucks headed to the rally fill early, especially from Texas, the Southeast and the West Coast. Ask for quotes in May or June, and try to have a carrier lined up by late June. You can still find space in July, but the choice gets thinner and the prices climb.
Plan for the bike to arrive before you do. Hand it over at least two weeks before the rally starts if you're shipping from either coast, and about ten days ahead from the Midwest. That leaves room for a pickup window and a delay on the road, so the bike is waiting when your flight lands instead of the other way around.
Where the Truck Meets You in the Black Hills
During the rally, Main Street in Sturgis and the blocks around it are packed with bikes, and a tractor-trailer can't get through. Most drivers arrange a meeting point instead. That might be a hotel lot in Rapid City, a truck stop near an I-90 exit, or the gate of your campground if it has room for a big rig.
Give the carrier the name and address of where you're staying when you book, and ask exactly where they plan to unload. Keep your phone on the day the bike arrives, because the driver will likely call a few hours ahead to set the spot.
Riding the Black Hills Once You're There
Arriving with fresh legs and a clean bike means you can spend the week on the roads people come for. Spearfish Canyon, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Mount Rushmore and Deadwood are all within a day's loop of Sturgis. Many riders ship in, ride the Hills for a week, and never touch the interstate.
South Dakota requires helmets only for riders under 18, but many of the Black Hills roads are tight, steep and crowded with rally traffic, so plan your gear for the conditions.
