Arizona to South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Phoenix to Sioux Falls costs about $600 to $825 on an open carrier, or about $850 to $1,150 enclosed. Rapid City, near the Black Hills, comes to about $550 to $750 open.
Mileage sets most of the price, but timing matters more here than in most states. The Sturgis rally pulls trailers toward the Black Hills each August, so prices there can rise and drivers get hard to book.
The heaviest touring bikes tend to add $50 to $100. A trike or sidecar can raise the quote by $150 to $300. A bike that does not run must be winched on, so tell the dispatcher early.
Outside rally season, bookings three weeks ahead with a loose pickup window are enough. For Sturgis, ask four to six weeks early and plan the trip home the same way. Our money-saving tips give more ways to reduce what you pay.

Mostly I-90, With Detours
One road, I-90, carries most of the load. It serves Spearfish, Sturgis, Rapid City, Murdo, Chamberlain, Mitchell and Sioux Falls, and crosses the Missouri River between Oacoma and Chamberlain over the Lewis and Clark Memorial Bridge. The speed limit is 80 mph from Rapid City to the Minnesota line, apart from a 65 mph stretch in Sioux Falls, and 75 mph between Rapid City and Wyoming.
The Black Hills are another matter. I-90 skirts the north and east sides of the hills, and Sturgis is just off it at exits 30 through 32. US 385 winds through the hills from Hot Springs via Custer and Hill City to Deadwood, where it joins US 85. Carriers mostly stay on I-90 and meet you in a town.
Pierre, the capital, is the odd one. It is not on an interstate. The nearest interstate point is Vivian, exit 212 on I-90, about 35 miles south, and drivers head north from there on US 83. That costs time and sometimes money, so name Pierre when you ask for quotes.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip
A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.
Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, and wind and grit are part of any trip on the northern Plains. Owners of custom paint and vintage bikes often pick enclosed for exactly that reason. Walk around the bike with the driver, read the report, and photograph each side with the date. Hold on to both until the bike is delivered in South Dakota.
Arizona to South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips
South Dakota is simple on I-90, with rally week as the big exception.
Rally Week Space
Trailer space for Sturgis disappears early, and late bookings cost more or wait. Ask for quotes once you have dates, and plan the ride home the same way.
Small Towns, Big Trucks
Sturgis has about 7,000 residents and gets crowded in August, and a tractor-trailer needs a lot with room to turn, so carriers may meet you in a larger town nearby.
Winter on I-90
Snow has closed stretches of I-90 and I-29, and a January pickup can slip by days.
Tip: Book Rally Shipping a Month Out
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally begins on the first Friday in August and lasts ten days. Ask for quotes four to six weeks out and allow a pickup window. Decide on the delivery town before booking, and expect many carriers to propose Rapid City, Spearfish or another town with room.
Tip: Moving to Ellsworth?
Ellsworth Air Force Base lies just north of Box Elder, roughly 10 miles northeast of Rapid City. For moves on orders, request quotes as soon as you have a report date, and ask each carrier about a military discount.
Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle
Wash the bike, take off loose bags and gadgets, and leave roughly a quarter tank. Disarm the alarm, take dated photos from every angle, and record any leaks. In rally season, name the exact town and a lot where the driver can stop, since Sturgis fills up. The motorcycle transport prep guide covers anything not listed here.
Arizona to South Dakota Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from Arizona to South Dakota?
Most Arizona to South Dakota shipments take 3-6 days once the bike is on the truck. Booking a pickup adds a few days, so figure one to two weeks from order to delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to South Dakota from Arizona?
A standard cruiser or sport bike from Phoenix to Sioux Falls runs about $600 to $825 on an open carrier and about $850 to $1,150 enclosed. Actual prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.
Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?
Open is the usual choice. Enclosed protects a show bike or fresh paint from wind, grit and the weather on the northern plains. The extra cost is roughly $250 to $325.
Where in South Dakota do carriers deliver?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Sturgis and Aberdeen see the most bikes. Smaller towns are served too, and Pierre takes a detour off I-90.
Can I ship a bike to Sturgis for the rally?
Yes, but trailers fill early, so ask for quotes four to six weeks ahead. Many carriers prefer to deliver to Rapid City or Spearfish, where there is room to unload.
How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from Arizona?
Wash the bike, clear off bags and loose gear, and keep the tank at roughly a quarter. Photograph each side with the date, and tell the dispatcher about leaks or a bike that will not start.
Should I ride my motorcycle from Arizona to South Dakota or ship it?
The ride is about 1,440 miles from Phoenix to Sioux Falls, which most riders cover in three long days. It is a long trip with wind and open miles. If you only need the bike in South Dakota, shipping it and flying is worth a quote.
Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?
No, as a rule. Bikes arrive in South Dakota on trailers without crates. Crating costs roughly $150 to $400 and is a choice for rare bikes.
Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from Arizona to South Dakota?
Typically. Arizona pickups are straightforward. In South Dakota, rally-week crowds in Sturgis and long gravel roads mean the driver may suggest Rapid City or another larger town.
Can I call for a quote at any hour?
Yes, the line at 1-800-590-6492 never closes, and the form on this page works whenever you have a minute.
