Michigan Motorcycle Shipping

Michigan is two peninsulas, and which one your bike is headed for decides how simple the job is. We provide up to ten free quotes from our network of licensed, insured carriers, which saves you time and money. A Detroit or Grand Rapids address is an ordinary interstate haul. Marquette or Sault Ste. Marie is a longer trip with a five-mile bridge in the middle of it. If you need to ship a motorcycle to or from Michigan, the carrier will most likely run I-75, which covers 395.9 miles of the state from the Ohio line to the Canadian border, or I-94 and I-96 across the south. Michigan motorcycle shipping also swings with the calendar, because many riders here put the bike away for winter and some send it south first. Rates below are estimates for a standard bike. Ship a Motorcycle to Michigan: Lower Peninsula or Upper

From the Ohio line, I-75 runs 395.9 miles north to Sault Ste. Marie, passing Detroit, Flint, Saginaw and Gaylord on the way. Most bikes coming up from the Southeast ride that road on a trailer, and the Ohio to Michigan lane feeds it. Bikes from Chicago come in on I-94, and the Illinois to Michigan lane is one of the busiest because it is only about 280 miles from Chicago to Detroit.

Metro Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing are the easy ones, since all three sit on the interstates. Flint sits where I-69 meets I-75, and Detroit is where I-75 meets I-94 and I-96, so a carrier running a southeast loop passes all three.

The Upper Peninsula is different. Everything north of the Straits of Mackinac goes over the Mackinac Bridge, which is about five miles long. The state's wind rules for the bridge list open trailers hauling anything as high-profile vehicles. Once sustained wind reaches 35 mph those vehicles need an escort, and between 50 and 65 mph they are barred from the bridge. A trailer loaded with bikes can be held at the bridge until the wind drops.

That is not a reason to worry, just a reason to build in slack. Tell the carrier early if your delivery is in Marquette, Houghton or anywhere else north of the bridge.

Michigan Motorcycle Shipping Rates and Transit Times

Last updated: October 2026

For a standard bike on an open trailer, a haul of about 250 miles costs roughly $325 to $450, about 500 miles runs $375 to $525, and about 1,000 miles runs $500 to $675. Detroit to Marquette is around 455 miles and quotes at $375 to $525. Distance matters less than people expect, because long hauls cost less per mile.

Enclosed trailers add roughly 30% to 50%. A crate adds about $150 to $400, a trike or sidecar about $150 to $300, and a heavy touring bike like a Gold Wing or Road Glide often adds $50 to $100. The table shows common Michigan lanes. Prices assume a standard bike on open transport unless noted, and transit time is days on the road after pickup, so add one to three days for scheduling.

How Getting Quotes Works

You don't have to call company after company. One request goes out to the carriers that run Michigan lanes, and the offers come back to you.

1. Send one request

Fill out the quote form at the top of this page, or call 1-800-590-6492 any hour of the day. Give us your pickup and delivery cities, the year, make and model of your bike, and the date you want it picked up.

2. Carriers respond

We pass your request to carriers that move motorcycles in and out of Michigan. You can receive up to ten free quotes without spending hours calling companies one by one.

3. Compare the offers

Look at price, pickup date, and whether the carrier offers open or enclosed transport. You can check any company you're considering on the FMCSA SAFER system.

4. Choose your company

You pick the company you want to work with. Ask that company about its insurance coverage, deposit, and payment terms before you commit.

Shipping a Motorcycle From Michigan Before the Snow

October and November are the outbound rush. Riders across the state send bikes to Florida and Arizona for the winter and fly down to meet them. A Detroit to Tampa run is about 1,185 miles and carriers quote it at $525 to $750 on an open trailer, usually 3 to 6 days on the road. The Michigan to Florida lane is the one to price first in autumn.

Going west is longer. A bike leaving Lansing for Phoenix covers about 1,915 miles, and a bike bound for California adds a few more days. Carriers fill those trailers over a week or more, so give a pickup window of several days instead of one date.

Shorter jobs are cheap and quick. Detroit to Ohio, or a run down to Chicago, are usually the quickest to schedule. If you are leaving the Upper Peninsula, expect wind at the bridge to affect the timing.

Michigan Motorcycle Transport: Interstates, Bridges and Shoreline Roads

Going north, I-75 is the main road. The Zilwaukee Bridge carries it over the Saginaw River near Saginaw. I-96 is the east-west spine from Detroit to Grand Rapids, and I-69 ties Flint to Lansing and the Indiana line.

Then there are the shoreline roads. M-119 runs 27.5 miles through Emmet County from near Petoskey to Cross Village, and its northern stretch, the Tunnel of Trees, is named for the branches that close over the road. It is a famous ride and a poor place to bring a tractor-trailer. If you live on it, plan to meet the driver at a lot on US 31.

Summer resort towns on the Lake Michigan side work the same way. A big truck cannot make the last half mile down a cottage road, so a hardware store or church lot is the usual handoff.

Motorcycle Shipping to Michigan by Season

Michigan has a short riding year, and the shipping calendar bends around it. Spring is the busy season. Between March and May, bikes that wintered in Florida or Texas come home, and trailers heading north fill up. Quotes sit higher then.

Winter is the other extreme. Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan and Lake Superior can make winter driving slow in west Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Outside the snowbird lanes, fall and winter quotes are often cheaper, if your bike can wait.

Summer is easy driving, but the weeks around big rallies fill early. Then comes the fall rush south, mostly down I-75. Book early in October if you want a pickup before the first heavy snow.

Michigan Rallies Worth Planning Around

Muskegon is the center of Michigan's rally calendar. Bike Time runs about five days each July (2026 was its 20th year), with group rides along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Rebel Road rally takes place in Muskegon in July too, and in 2026 the two ran side by side.

Muskegon is a small lakeshore city, so rally week fills hotels and campgrounds fast. If you want the bike waiting at your lodging, confirm with the front desk that they will accept a drop-off before the carrier is booked. Many places will not.

If you want a bike in Muskegon for the July events, book at least two to three weeks ahead. Rally weeks tend to raise prices on busy lanes. And if you plan to ride out to Sturgis in August, shipping a bike one way and flying home is something many Michigan riders do.

Moving on Orders Near Selfridge

Selfridge Air National Guard Base sits in Harrison Township near Mount Clemens and hosts the 127th Wing, along with Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and Marine Corps units. Orders in or out usually come with a short window, so get quotes as soon as you have a report date. Ask each carrier whether it offers a military discount, since some do.

Michigan Motorcycle Shipping Challenges and Tips

Winter and one long bridge cause most of the delays. A few habits cut them down.

Mackinac Bridge Wind

When sustained wind hits 35 mph, trailers need an escort across the bridge, and at higher speeds they are barred. Upper Peninsula deliveries can slip a day.

Lake-Effect Snow

Snow off Lake Michigan and Lake Superior can slow winter driving in west Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Pickups get pushed, not cancelled.

The Spring Crunch

Everyone wants their bike back between March and May. Trailers heading north fill early and quotes rise, so ask for quotes weeks ahead.

Tip: Say North of the Bridge

If the bike goes to Marquette, Houghton or the Soo, say so when you request quotes. Ask each carrier how it handles a day of high wind.

Tip: Book the Fall Run Early

To get a bike to Florida before the first snow, request quotes in late September. October slots go fast on the Michigan to Florida lane.

Tip: Winterize Before Pickup

If the bike will sit in storage after delivery, add fuel stabilizer, then run it a few minutes. Remove soft bags and take photos from each side. The prep checklist covers the rest.

Michigan Motorcycle Shipping FAQs

What is the cost to ship a motorcycle to Michigan?

For a standard bike on an open carrier, about $325 to $450 for 250 miles, $375 to $525 for 500 miles and $500 to $675 for 1,000 miles. Enclosed adds roughly 40%. Season and bike type also move the price, so compare the quotes you get.

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from Florida to Michigan?

Miami to Detroit is about 1,395 miles and usually takes 3 to 6 days on the road. Add one to three days for pickup scheduling. Spring is the busy season for this lane, so expect the longer end.

Can a carrier deliver to the Upper Peninsula?

Yes. Every delivery north of the Straits of Mackinac crosses the Mackinac Bridge. Tell carriers the city when you request quotes, and allow extra time in case high wind holds the trailer at the bridge.

Does winter stop motorcycle shipping in Michigan?

It slows it. Lake-effect snow can delay pickups, so allow extra days. Winter quotes outside the snowbird lanes are often cheaper.

Should I choose open or enclosed transport?

Open is fine for most bikes and costs less. Enclosed is worth it for a classic, a custom paint job, or a trip through salt and slush in late winter, when road spray gets everywhere.

Can I ship a bike to Muskegon for Bike Time in July?

Yes. Book two to three weeks ahead because carriers fill rally weeks early and prices tend to climb. Give them a pickup window and a delivery address, such as a hotel that accepts a drop-off.

Do I need to be home for pickup and delivery?

You or an adult you name must be there to sign the condition report at both ends. Take photos of the bike before the driver arrives and look it over before signing.

Can I ship a motorcycle that does not run?

Yes, but tell the dispatcher when you request quotes. A bike that will not start needs a carrier with a winch, and some charge extra for it. Saying so early avoids a surprise at pickup.
