California North Carolina

Charlotte is about 2,410 miles from Los Angeles, and the state has three kinds of delivery. California to North Carolina motorcycle shipping takes roughly 6-9 days on the road. We send your request to carriers in our network and you can get up to ten free quotes. If you need to ship a motorcycle to North Carolina from California, say whether the drop is in the Piedmont, the mountains or the coast, since a trailer reaches Charlotte easily and a hollow near Asheville takes more effort. California to North Carolina Motorcycle Shipping Rates by Bike Type

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Charlotte runs about $800 to $1,125 on an open carrier, and about $1,125 to $1,575 enclosed. San Diego comes in at about $800 to $1,100 open, and a San Francisco pickup runs about $875 to $1,200.

Several days of interstate is a lot of miles to put on your own bike.

Raleigh costs a little more from Los Angeles, about $825 to $1,150 open. Asheville is a little closer at $775 to $1,075, though it can be slower to book than Charlotte, since fewer trailers head into the mountains.

Large touring bikes usually run $50 to $100 more, and trikes or sidecar rigs run $150 to $300 more. A bike that will not start needs a winch, so mention it in your request.

The best months for moving a bike are spring and early fall, and those are also the busiest. October color season and warm-weather riding weeks tighten trailer space, so quotes run a little higher. See our money-saving tips for more.

I-85, I-40 and the Mountain Roads

I-85 runs 231 miles across the state, through Charlotte, Greensboro and Durham on its way to Virginia. Near Greensboro, I-40 shares the road with it for about 31 miles until the two split near Hillsborough, which is where Raleigh-bound traffic peels off. I-77 heads north out of Charlotte, and I-95 runs through the east side of the state toward Fayetteville. Charlotte sits where I-85 meets I-77, so trailers cross there all week.

Fly into Charlotte and pick the bike up when it arrives.

The Piedmont, with Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Durham, is simple, since interstates run through it and a driver can reach most addresses within a few miles of the highway. The mountains take more effort. Asheville is reached by I-40 and I-26, but the roads out of it climb quickly, and a long trailer does not fit on every one.

On the coast, a driver may prefer a lot near the highway to a narrow beach street, so offer one if you are near Wilmington or the Outer Banks.

The twisty roads riders come for are not routes a carrier takes. The Blue Ridge Parkway, 469 miles from Virginia to Cherokee, has a 45 mph speed cap, and commercial vehicles need National Park Service approval to use it. The Tail of the Dragon packs 318 curves into 11 miles of US-129 at Deals Gap, at the Tennessee border. Pickups near either happen on nearby highways, usually in the closest town.

How Your Motorcycle Is Loaded and Secured for the Trip

Red sport motorcycle strapped down on a wooden crate base, California to North Carolina motorcycle shipping crate
This crate base is optional on the route and adds roughly $150 to $400 to the bill.

A good driver loads a motorcycle upright. The front wheel goes into a chock so it can't move, and soft straps go around solid points like the frame or the lower triple clamp. The straps are tightened enough to hold the bike but not so much that they bottom out the forks. Hooks stay off your bars, levers and paint.

Enclosed trailers add a roof and walls, which helps over a week of weather and in hurricane season on the coast. Open carriers are the standard choice and suit most bikes. Look the bike over with the driver, then read the condition report before it goes on the truck. Your photos and that report are what you compare against in North Carolina.

California to North Carolina Motorcycle Shipping Challenges & Tips

North Carolina has mountains, a coast and a weather calendar. Plan around all three.

Mountain Ice

Winter ice can close a road in the mountains for a day, and high sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are often shut from late fall through early spring.

Hurricane Season

The season runs June through November, with the peak from late August through September. A storm near Wilmington or the Outer Banks can close roads and halt loading.

Hollow and Hill Roads

The roads out of Asheville climb quickly, and a long trailer does not fit on every one. Expect a meetup at a lot in town.

Tip: Shipping for the Parkway or the Dragon?

Some owners ship their own bike to the mountains and rent a cabin for a week. Spring and early fall are the busy windows. If you plan to ship the bike up and ride it home, book the return leg when you book the first one.

Tip: Moving to Bragg, Lejeune or Cherry Point?

Fort Bragg is at Fayetteville, Camp Lejeune at Jacksonville, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point at Havelock and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro. Put the base name in your quote request, and ask every carrier about military pricing.

Tip: Prepare Your Motorcycle

Wash the bike and take off bags and phone mounts. Aim for a quarter tank, disable the alarm and take dated photos of every angle. Say whether the address is in the Piedmont, the mountains or on the coast. Our guide to preparing a motorcycle for transport has the full checklist.

California to North Carolina Motorcycle Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship a motorcycle from California to North Carolina?

Most California to North Carolina shipments take 6-9 days once the bike is on the truck. Add a few days for pickup scheduling, and more in winter on the mountain roads. Allow two to three weeks from booking to delivery.

How much does it cost to ship a motorcycle to North Carolina from California?

A standard cruiser or sport bike from Los Angeles to Charlotte runs about $800 to $1,125 on an open carrier and about $1,125 to $1,575 enclosed. From San Francisco the open range is about $875 to $1,200. Real prices depend on your bike, dates and cities.

Is open or enclosed transport better for this route?

Open is the normal choice. Enclosed helps in summer heat, in hurricane season and for a high-value bike. The extra cost is roughly $325 to $450.

Which North Carolina cities do carriers deliver to?

Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Durham are the easiest. Asheville can be slower to book, and coastal addresses may mean meeting at a lot.

Can a carrier use the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Commercial vehicles need National Park Service approval to use it, so pickups near the Parkway happen on nearby highways, usually in the closest town.

How should I prepare my motorcycle for shipping from California to North Carolina?

Wash it and take off soft saddlebags and mounts. Leave a quarter tank or less, take dated photos from every side, and report leaks or a non-runner to the dispatcher.

Should I ride my motorcycle from California to North Carolina or ship it?

You would ride about 2,410 miles from Los Angeles to Charlotte, about four or five long days. Fuel, hotels and tire wear eat the savings, so ride if the trip is the point and ship if it is not.

Do I need to crate my motorcycle for this trip?

Rarely. Bikes get to North Carolina strapped on open trailers or loaded in enclosed ones. Crating adds roughly $150 to $400, so keep it for show bikes and rare machines.

Is door-to-door motorcycle delivery available from California to North Carolina?

Yes, in most cases. In the mountains near Asheville the driver may ask you to meet in town or at a lot along the highway.

Can I call for a quote at any hour?

Yes. The line, 1-800-590-6492, is open day and night, and the form can bring back up to ten quotes.
